Sitting out on a large rock overlooking Widow's Hill, the beautiful blonde woman's body shook with sobs of defeat. Every time she saw Barnabas and Josette together it was as if a knife went through her heart an inch at a time, stopping to be twisted oh so slowly. Angelique was very reluctant to use any more witchcraft, because she knew it would be pointless, the incident with Sarah had proven that. She could feel the sobs rising at the humiliation of that incident. That had been the beginning of the end of everything for her. Barnabas was her life. She could not and would not go on without him. Without him her existence was dark and unbearable.
Barnabas and Josette loved one another, and would live out their natural lives together in that state, and she would have to go back to Martinique, but not as the servant of the powerful DuPres' family, she would have to fend for herself. The DuPres' wanted nothing more to do with her, she was lucky they weren't going to leave her here to take care of herself in this horrid country. She hated it here. Nothing had been the same between her and Barnabas as in the warm tropical ambiance of the Island.
Angelique knew that the Island without Barnabas would be as cold and harsh as this country, and she did not want to face it. She could not. It hurt too bad. She wanted oblivion, the oblivion that only death could bring. Rising she walked to the edge of the cliff and stared out, her hair and clothing blowing wildly by the winds of the dark ominous Atlantic Ocean. She didn't care about that, she knew her oblivion would be coming soon.
The man had been watching the blonde woman. He sensed her sadness, and wanted to take it from her. He knew he was on Collins property, but that didn't disturb him, he had known Joshua Collins for a long time, and knew he would be happy to see him. He wanted to know what this blonde woman was doing sitting there sobbing with such despair. He had missed Barnabas' wedding by a week, but had come anyway to congratulate him, and see his old friend Joshua.
Watching the blonde woman rise and walk towards the cliff, a foreboding descended upon the man, and rushed toward the woman, trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to scare her, she was awfully close to the edge of that deadly cliff. He could hear what had become legendary throughout his travels, the Widow's Wailing. So it is true he thought briefly.
Adjusting the large sword at his side, he softly took
the woman's arms and pulled her to him in a firm grip. He felt an unexpected
thrill shoot through him at her touch. She screamed when he grabbed her, and
he turned her around to face him, she was ready to give him a scalding rebuke,
but was quickly silenced. She found herself looking into the most beautiful
face, and warm eyes she had ever seen. His long black hair was blowing wild
in the winds. His chiseled features showed the
strength of his character. His eyes showed wisdom of someone far older than
his face belied. The hardness of his body said the man was used to working hard,
but the softness of his hands said he was a refined personage. Angelique felt
her heart jump in her throat at the visage of this man, and all of a sudden
the sun shined for her. Thoughts of Barnabas and Josette had fled her mind,
except with the thought she was glad she had failed. "Who are you?"
the beautiful blonde with the unbelievable blue eyes demanded with a slight
French accent.
He stared at her, a twinkle in his eyes now. He was going to stay at Collinwood for awhile if she was here, he thought as he answered her, "Duncan McLeod," the Immortal said softly.
