Jeremiah willed himself to silence, as he watched
Angelique leaving Josette's grave, laughing in her victory. So, it was her all
along, and now she's made a sinister bargain with her master to come back here
from the dead, and claim Barnabas. His nephew was as foolish as the rest of
them, including himself. Josette had lain rotting, eaten away at by rodents,
hounded by flies and maggots from her body waste in a cold, dark, and relentless
prison, and her jailor was supposed to have loved her. Her escape had been death,
and even death had made sure she suffered beyond comprehension until she had
taken her last breath. Jeremiah took a deep breath, his body shuddering as he
tried to control the sobs and tears that were threatening, slowly releasing
his breath, he got his emotions under control, and wiped away the tears. Taking
one more look at the lonely grave of Josette, he turned abruptly, and made his
way to the Old House.
