Each child grew older and neither showing interest in their own families. Having no friends, they each found their solace in the magical powers they found to be a natural gift. They both would find themselves transported more each day into the dark blackness of the evil.
The families that cared for them became frightened and brought clergy in to visit them, but only to have Evan and Nicholas repulsed and turning away from their "God".
By the time of their seventeenth birthday, each had already dabbled even further into the finer arts of the "Devils magic".
Evan was be able to use a particular skill of manipulation through his mental powers particularly among the villages pretty maidens.
And Nicholas' talent lay within his summoning of certain demons to work their evil deeds upon his enemies.
One bright, hot summers day, the smell of sweet hay was carried by the soft breeze. Evan was outside after his lunch, as was his custom. He looked for the dog so he could begin the punishment. He found great delight beating the animal. The power that he experienced was overwhelming.
The animal, which had grown particularly nasty and mean lately towards him, with little wonder why!
Evan spied the dog, and with a spark of cruelty in his eyes, reached up towards a low-hanging branch, and snapped a thick piece of the tree. A nice thick piece.
The dog glared at Evan, as though he knew the torturing would begin again. As Evan brought the wood up over his shoulder to beat the animal, suddenly, from his right, a mans voice interrupted him. Quickly, Evan threw the wood to the side.
He was wearing a long cape that had the color of emeralds to it.
Smiling at the lad, he came up to him, "What, are you going to do with that switch, young man? Beat your dog with it? HA! Absolutely joyous!" A sick laughter came from the caped stranger. "Yes, I suspect you would, Tell me, what do want to do with your powers that you have?" Evan, shocked confused and angry that the man had been spying on him, thinking that this stranger had been spying on him as he performed his magic earlier. He asked him with narrowed eyes, "what powers?" The tormented dog saw his escape, quickly scuttled away towards the woods in the distance. Evan now robbed of his delight for this day, watched it run out of his reach. Turning his head once more to this stranger. He wanted to know what he knew about him,and whether he should "silence" him through a mental overload. To cause so much activity in his brain, he would first begin to convulse and then death would occur. He had first done this to a man who had crossed him at a wrong time. Evan watched in fascination as the spasming man began to bleed from his ears and nose, gasping his last bit of air.
The mans gaze locked into Evans eyes and replied, "I know of you, my boy. And you shall know of me.
Do you wish to learn of more? To accumulate more than if you were to remain here?" The man asked teasingly. "Yes" Evan replied, "Then come with me, now,and I shall make you mightier than any mere mortal!" I shall even, if you prove yourself to me, immortal!
Evan agreed. He thirsted and desired power. The stranger touched Evans arm and the two dissolved into the very hot summers air.
Nicholas in the meantime, found that if he concentrated enough, small objects could be made to appear, and just as easily disappear. He could also use mind manipulation for his own wants.
One day shortly after the encounter with Evan, the same stranger had come upon Nicholas as he was using his own powers to make a pulsing, luminescent ball appear. From the outlying fields of his boyhood home, there was solitude and privacy and it was where he worked his magic. He stood among the high grasses whispering an incantation to make the orb disappear. Slowly, it began to flicker and fade, then it was gone.
"Bravo"! came a mans voice. Spinning around, angry at the interruption of his spell, Nicholas stared intently at this man. No, not a man though, he knew that. The man was robed..
"Who are you? He demanded. "I am one who cares for you, and can take you to a place where your powers can be used for anything you desire. Where you can practice what you are doing now without fear and ridicule. I will give you powers unending! More than you could dream existed! And a life that shall never know death."
A gleam arose within Nicholas' eyes at this prospect and without a word, Diabolos touched his arm and they were transported to Hell.
Evan and Nicholas would never see each other, they had to be kept separate, to have them together, would either to cause their own destruction or, in time, the end of their father, Diabolos.
