Perhaps this will lead to something. Perhaps it won't. It's the fruit of a conversation that my husband and I had over dinner tonight . . .
-------------------------------------------------------
"Vicki, come with me!" Peter yelled.
Her heart in her throat, Vicki ran to her husband as he began to fade from view.
*************************
Vicki regained consciousness in a very brightly-lit room. {Odd. I don't remember any lights this bright in the 18th century. I also don't remember that mechanical humming sound.}
For a humming sound there was -- an incessant, just beyond the range of hearing, humming sound. Experimentally, she cracked open one eye. It was much too bright, so she hurriedly closed it again.
"I think she's regaining consciousness, Doctor." She heard Peter's voice saying.
{Doctor??? Doctor Guthrie? Doctor Woodard? Doctor Hoffman?}
"You see, Peter? I told you that the Transmat beam wouldn't hurt her." The man who spoke had a distinctly British accent tinged with a trace of somewhere else that Vicki couldn't quite place.
Her curiosity got the better of her. She cracked open an eye and was stunned by what she saw.
The other occupant of the room was a tall man - well over six feet tall, wearing a long overcoat, a floppy hat, and a long, long striped scarf. He bugged his eyes out and took off the hat, revealing a tremendous amount of curly hair.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Bradford." The tall man said
with an exceedingly toothy grin.
