How easy was it for Dr. Hoffman to display a stoic personality. Quite an easy one. She excelled in that area. How to display emotionalism was totally outside her realm.

Barnabas and Julia had come back from their sojourn in 1840 indifferent to each other. Barnabas had declared his love to Angelique in 1840.

Julia had reinstituted the experiments with complete resolution for that of Barnabas' recovery from that as a vampire. She was somehow able to maintain her stoicism during that time with Barnabas, but felt subject to bouts of crying when she was around him, she at last could hide the fact from him she loved him and watch him be attracted to others. She as woman, was also affected, and the "We are just merely friends" tortured her soul. She found herself like any other woman, she could not longer stand by, and deal with this. She tried to but couldn't.

Upon the last treatment with Barnabas over as such. And as such his feelings for her were changing weren't.

In the midst of an evening at the Old House Julia burst into tears.

Barnabas asked, "Julia , what is wrong?"

"Julia looked at Barnabas and said, "I can't stand this anymore Barnabas, I must go, I know you don't love me , but I can not stand by your side and just be a friend to you. It is too painful for me to deal anymore ,I am sorry."

"Julia," muttered Barnabas, " I am sorry, I don't what to say. I am devoid of any words, Julia, Surely , you are my friend, You know that."

"Barnabas, I am sorry, it is the love for you I feel that has changed me and that has made, me yes , Barnabas, like any other woman, I need to be loved by a man. Being friends, is too unbearable .For when I am near you all I want to do is cry, I can't help it. I need more than friendship. I am sorry."

"Julia, you can't be serious?" exclaimed Barnabas.

"Yes, Barnabas, I am quite serious . I weep all the time. What we want from each other is so different. For along time I thought , but I see you are right.... We are just friends, I can't bear that thought for I love you so. I can't help myself please understand."

"In fact , Barnabas, I think we should not see much of each other anymore. I am in fact going to leave Wyndcliffe and go back to Philadelphia and if that works out there I shall remain there indeffinately with my medical practice. And maybe I shall start over a new life, have new interests, and maybe who knows I can regain my self respect for I have lost it now. I feel nothing but pain.

"I won't be here much longer , and from now on, I want our relationship to be professional only. I am your doctor, and you are my patient. I would like you to call me Dr. Hoffman , and I will call you Mr. Collins. I will guard your secret to my grave. But if I can help it Mr. Collins, my other feelings for you will be totally contained. I will not change my mind. In fact, I have some friends in Philadelphia who are willing to help me overcome this advertisity."

Barnabas frowned over this lamentation from Julia.

"Julia, you can't be serious," snarled Barnabas.

"Dr. Hoffman to you Mr. Collins, and yes, if you need to see me in the future you will come to my office to see me and schedule an appointment as does any patient. If you do not , I will not come to you. Is that understood, Mr. Collins. Or I can refer you out to one of my associates, who can treat you. You are normal and know human, any regular doctor can treat your illnesses."

'I have indulged and spoiled you , Mr. Collins, as any woman would do for a pampered man, and I have let you be masculine and regain your self confidence and have gone along with you on many things, I have gazed into your eyes, and have been your confidant. "Never again,"....With that she left, and packed and departed from Collinwood.

Three months later in Philadelphia , Julia had started a new life as a doctor in a hospital as a pychiatrist. She stated to go to cultural events and museums. She still lamented for Barnabas but for the first time in her life found a male friend , a fellow doctor that acted
as an alley for her in her tormented state.

However, the male doctor friend saw Julia was still in love with Barnabas Collins.

"Julia , I am sorry that you still have feelings for that Collins fellow. Your feelings toward Mr. Collins are genuine. I see you love him. But I fear for your well being, Julia. That this will hurt you as a person. You aren't benefiting from being here I was wrong I am sorry, for thinking that the solution to your problem with Mr. Collins was to be here, but I see you were just as well off in Collinwood. At least we tried. I have an idea. Why don't you go back to Wyndcliffe, and then I shall join you there to be moral support for you. I think that at least you know you have a friend Julia.

In the meantime, Barnabas was besides himself having no Julia around, to spoil, indulge and pamper him. Slowly but surely this was affecting him. He missed her so. He missed having the prescence of the woman, Julia by his side. What could he do to get back the friendship, he actually wanted a bit more or did he ? He was unsure. He knew he missed Julia greatly.

Several months later, Julia as agreed to by her friend had come back to Collinwood and resumed her position at Barnabas, and slowly went back to somewhat of a friendship they had before. But she know had the support of her other male doctor friend , who would be joining her shortly in a few months after he settled his practice down in Philadelphia.

Barnabas, had missed the softness of Julia's eyes but would admit it hardly to himself. But he knew she was not just a doctor to him.. He still didn't understand why Julia was so contained to him. Then one day Julia mentioned that she had a male friend from Cornell who would be joining her at Wyndcliffe to take a position there.

Barnabas was besides himself and sick to his stomach.

What was little known to Julia and Barnabas was this man was to serve as a catalyst for further promoting Barnabas' love for Julia. So this man had a plan. If Julia's friend was able to gain Barnabas' help for Julia to help her from her contain feelings and promote her feminity, nature would take its course...

This friend of Dr. Hoffman's was none other than Dr. Jeffrey Halstead.
