Somehow, Dr. Halstead , had become a guest at the Old House. So he and Julia went they Wyndcliffe together often left Collinwood , and came home together. In fact, there would be nights that they would not come home at all. Many a night lately, Julia had become engrossed so in her work, she forgot about the element of time . Dr. Halstead , equally guilty of loving his work and his patients sometimes would be so tired, he would go into one of the rooms at Wyndcliffe on a break and fall asleep. Julia was quite touched by this and placed a blanket on him. And he in turn would see her come so exhausted and frustrated, she would be unable to cry about a patient even though she wanted to. They often would be seen together for hours taking about their patients, developing patient care plans or discussing diagnosis about their patients. Dr. Halstead, was loved by the patients for his gentle deamnor made him a favorite with patients, and more often would be of great assistance helping patients open to him and make progess in their recovery. From the point of being a psychiatrist, he felt sometimes Julia's inability to open up or cry was a mask for fear of intimacy with people and that might impair on her ability to be successful in the treatment of patients. She was good in her field, but he was concerned as a decent man felt that she Julia needed some help for he feared it hendered what type of full life she could lead. No , he would not let that happen. He would be her friend and help her . In fact, since Barnabas was close to her, he would approach him about this and gain his help. Halstead tried to do it on his own but Julia snapped at him and told him it was none of his business. But it was on the night, after one of her patient's had committed suicide all she did was gaze into the room, unable to cry. What Halstead didn't know is, Julia made sure no one not even he was around, then she sobbed.
Halstead , concerned for Julia's fear of intimacy
hurting her, made his way to see Barnabas at the Old House. Barnabas by this
time , had allowed Halstead to become a friend to him and trusted him. Barnabas
appreciated the man's sincerity about people particulary the patients at Wyndcliffe
and his devotion to Julia and the Collins family.
Barnabas opened the door and allowed Jeffrey in. Jeffrey appeared quite upset,
not usual for him, thought Barnabas. Barnabas gave his full attention to Jeffrey,
and asked him ,"What is wrong, you look upset?"
Jeffrey repied, "Its Julia, Barnabas , I am very concerned about her she hurts inside but won't confide in anyone about it and it's hurting her Barnabas, I can't stand it. Julia is afraid of intimacy Barnabas. She's a good doctor, decent person, and deserves a happy life. She is hurting herself. Somehow by keeping a safe distance,,she doesn't have to deal with any feelings, and that is hurting her you couldn't imagine, Barnabas, I won't allow it to continue as a friend and as a doctor. She deserves better than that.Would you have any idea why she avoids intiimacy , Barnabas? You have known her a long time, why won't she allow herself to confide in others, cry, be kissed, sing, smile? I am not going to interfere in your relationship with Julia, but she deserves a life, a home , a family, and ability to love and be loved. I intend for that to happen. I know she holds a close friendship with you , but I want your help. I have seen by the way she looks at you that she loves you. I have seen that your feelings are contained for her. I will not try to influence your feelings in that regard, but this is hurting her. And I won't allow that she is devoted and good a woman to have this on her. Do you understand? If you have no feelings for her as a woman then help her as a friend. Let go of the tie you have on her, and encourage her to have the ability to love someone else she has so much to offer. This encouragement can only come from you Barnabas. I am not saying to forget your friendship, but I am saying Julia is not the Messiah and she is a woman and a doctor too. She needs to have the ability to love and be loved. Help her develop her ability to have feeling , be a woman, be kissed, held, touched, smile, look at the sky, and share a life she was meant to be shared with a man. I guarantee you she is a beautiful woman,she will have no troubles. No matter what happens I will always be there for Julia for the rest of her life. Since she responds to you, will you come to Wyndcliffe and help her? SInce you are so good in the humanities Collins, I will incorporate you into our patient care programs. You can help our patients anyway , talk to them about the literature and humanities you know so well. You will help them, and be able to help Julia. I beg of you , please?"
Barnabas was in awe with this man and could not refuse his request. So Barnabas now would become a part of Wyndcliffe for Julia's sake to help her.
