In his arms,Barnabas carried his wife into the drawing room gazing into her eyes. Julia, quite smitten with her husband gave him a small kiss on his cheek. Julia was surprised. Barnabas had made some delightful changes in The Old House.
"Julia, my love, I hope you are happy in your new home. I will do anything in my power to make you happy. I love you as no other man will. I will fill your every wanton desire. You and I are together forever. Our love for each other transcends time. Julia, you do love me, don't you"?
"Of course, my darling, I love you with all my soul,
now and forevermore, Barnabas. Why, do you
ask dear?"
"Julia, I can't imagine life without you. You are my life. If I lost you, I would be lost. Life would have no meaning. Never Without You, are my life , my inspiration, my hope. Our love transcends all time.
He presented his wife with a bouquet of roses. In fact the house at various points, had fresh arrangements of flowers on them. At other places, oil paints now appeared on various walls of different rooms downstairs. The room seemed full of life. The table was set formally with a table cloth, fresh flowers, candles,a bottle of wine, and china.
The picture of Barnabas was gone. There was no picture there. Barnabas' portrait hung in the foyer as it did in The New House.
Barnabas extended his hand out to his wife, for them to be seated to lighted table for dinner. This was the first dinner Mr. and Mrs. Collins were spending together in their new home.
Behind him,Barnabas pulled a large oil portrait and presented to Julia. It was a wedding portrait done in oil that was of Barnabas and Julia.
"Julia, you are my treasure, my life. I hope you enjoy your new life in our home ".
Barnabas placed the oil painting over the mantle of the drawing room.
"Julia, this is just the beginning of our life."
Barnabas and Julia sat down to their dinner, which Willie had served them. Julia's eyes were fixed on her husband with a deep dark intent. Barnabas gazed upon his wife with great admiration.
Barnabas really looked at Julia, not taking her granted. She was his treasure to him. He had thought about if he hadn't come to the realization that he loved Julia, that he would be alone in the New House and that Julia may have wed Dr. Halstead instead. The thought of that sickened him so. "Was I so foolish to think that Julia would never marry and want the opportunity to be loved by a man? I came that close to losing her, taking her for granted all those year I saw Julia, but I really never saw her. Oh if I had realized too late. She would be married to another devoted to him, having his children, and sharing her soul with another."
He would have been deprived of such happiness. He was close to losing her. Thank goodness he didn't realize it too late."
Barnabas muttered, "Julia , I will never take you for granted again. I was such a fool for not seeing you as a woman who would love and wanted to be loved by a man. I wasn't able to really see you , Julia. Beneath, my feelings, I have always loved you, but put you as a means for my survival. I equated you with a deity. When I did that I could not see you Julia, I am forever sorry I caused you such pain, and denied myself a happy life with you beside my side. I will honor, and protect you, my Julia."
Barnabas realized that Julia was still a bit contained, that was just her personality, however, he had knowledge to make her smile. After all he was a man of sophistication and had knowledge on how to handle a woman. Julia was not different. Barnabas simply charmed his wife.
Barnabas presented his wife with a few tokens of his love for her; an engraved locket with an engraving "To my beloved, Julia, I will love you and you always forever be in my heart." B.C. 4/5/71. He had given her small leather bound editions of several books, including some by Lord Byron, Leo Tolstoy, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Julia softened and smiled at her husband. Tears fell from her eyes.
Willie came into the drawing to inquire if Barnabas or Julia needed anything else before he was to depart.
"Julia and Barnabas, I just want you to know how happy I am about you getting married. I've been hoping that Barnabas would come to his senses and realize that he has loved you as you have loved him. You two look like a pair of lovebirds."
"Barnabas , will you be needing anything else before I go.? The rest of the special arrangements have been made Barnabas as you had asked".
Barnabas smiled, "No Willie , you may go. I want to thank you for all the hard work you have gone to make the house presentable for Julia. I appreciate that."
