In 1971, when Barnabas Collins adopted Julia's daughter Nicole, Dr.Carl Hoffman made a special trip to Collinsport to meet Julia's husband. Julia was very reluctant to do so but at Barnabas' prompting to renew family ties especially for the sake of Nicole, had agreed to do so. Well, in fact shortly after Dr. Carl Hoffman's arrival to Collinsport, there was intense dislike on both sides immediately. Barnabas found Carl to be cruel and rigid, and not respectable to Julia. Dr. Carl Hoffman expressed his resentment about Barnabas adopting Nicole. He would do all he could to stop this legally. Barnabas was infuriated and destined to take the situation into control. The two men clashed in the courts in an intense legal battle. However, Barnabas eventually won the legal battle and adopted Nicole. What had enraged Julia's father was that Barnabas has a mysterious background, was too philosophical, non practical. Nicole, sensed what was going on and had an intense dislike for her grandfather in general . She found him to be what she termed as impervious, inhumane, and cruel to Julia. So communication after the adoption essentially ceased. In the interim however, Carl had made Nicole has sole heir and had established a trust fund only on the condition that she attended medical school and become a doctor. Nicole disinterested in medicine anyway, was not concerned about the inheritance, she frowned upon the whole notion.
