Outside the halls of the Old House, Nicole looked somber at her mother, Julia, not knowing who she is but doing her bidding. Julia has discussed the importance of keeping their daughter safe within the confounds of the Old House until she regains her memory to keep her safe from Blair. Although Blair had been responsible for sending Nicole to another time, Julia felt there were other factors contributing to Nicole's amnesia. Julia had a discussion with Barnabas and told him she would need to analyze her daughter because she was suffering from an internal conflict of some kind. This suffering was causing the amnesia to remain. Julia was concerned Nicole may be heading for a complete mental shutdown rather than a recovery. Julia would have to act as a doctor treating her daughter to help her recovery from her mental anguish. Julia proceeded slowly each day to take Nicole on walks outside in the sun and to Widow's Hill to see the ocean.
Nicole began to relax more around Julia and began to trust her. Nicole became more open to any discussion that Julia may initiate. Julia told Nicole, "Nicole, we may be discussing some rather unpleasant subjects , but this is to help you heal. I want you to trust me and feel that I am doing this in your best interests to help find out what is troubling you and causing you to suppress your memory. I am going to hypnotize you and hopefully by proceeding this way I can help restore you to your prior state." Nicole believed Julia was her mother and Barnabas was her father, but she did not remember who she was. She just believed them. In the meantime, Charles had recovered and sat with Nicole every day out in the sun also. The person to whom Nicole didn't respond to and avoided was Barnabas. Nicole seemed to trust Julia more, and confide in her rather than Barnabas, which upset him a great deal. He had always been close with his daughter and it hurt him deeply to be rejected by someone he had loved remain so aloof and indifferent to him.
Julia reassured Barnabas that this hopefully was a temporary setback, but to be patient and remember Nicole had suffered quite a trauma in the plane crash. Julia didn't tell Barnabas that Nicole at this point should have recovered, but she was going to pursue it no matter what.
