Charles approached Barnabas and Julia about Nicole . Heartbroken, he cried in front of his in-laws about the loss of his wife to him. He just didn't understand what he had done to make Nicole so unhappy, or why she was this way in particular. Charles indicated even at Wyndcliffe, Nicole would appear to be happy, but then would become sullen. She appeared to look very sick and in a great deal of misery. And everytime he would approach her, she would snap back at him with a lost look on her face. In addition, to that she would have many sleepless nights tossing, turning, and screaming. Nicole had not slept well for many weeks now and appeared to be in a state of torment. He asked Julia is Nicole had been ill, she was also constantly throwing up. Of course, he wanted to examine Nicole but she indicated she was fine and would go to Dr. Halstead if anything was bothering her. Charles, was confused why Nicole would not seek Julia to examine her. Furthermore, Nicole said she was going away to Boston taking a temporary leave from her position at Wyndcliffe to attend a medical course at Harvard that could extent itself out to be more than a year. Why was the wife he loved doing this?

Barnabas and Julia loved Charles like he was their own son. How could their own daughter be leaving a husband that loved her more than life itself?. They felt very sad for Charles plight and Julia hugged her son in law to console him.

Barnabas replied, "Charles, we are concerned with this situation and we will talk to Nicole. I know she loves you very much. We do not understand this ourselves but I promise you will find out what is wrong and make the situation right for the both of you. You are a good husband Charles, and If my daughter has any intentions of continuing this behavior she is sadly mistaken. I will take matters into my hand and deal with this personally do you understand? She may think she doesn't have to answer to you, but she will find me quite different you, I promise she won't get away with this behavior very long. And is she thinks she just can up and walk away from her husband because she feels like it, she is sadly mistaken. She made a promise to you as your wife, I will see to it personally she keeps that promise and not be so willful. I assure you, she will not be leaving Collinwood, despite what she thinks. I will go over to Dr. Halstead myself and see what my daughter is up to. You have my word on that. Now calm yourself and go back to your room and rest. I will handle this."

Reluctantly, Charles departed to rest , while Barnabas and Julia ventured out to see Dr. Halstead.

"If Nicole thinks she will behave this way, she has surprise coming to her, and leaving Coliinwood, something is terribly wrong, Julia. She has never stayed away from us like this before, not since...... And if something is wrong, she should come to us regardless," said Barnabas in a very hurtful tone.

"I promise you this before this night is over I shall have an explanation of what is going on. I swear to you, Julia. If I have to confront our daughter I shall, despite her snapping".
