Julia and Nicole had a special relationship.

Julia still thinking back to Nicole as a little girl. She could hypnotize her then and she would forget about Woodard. In adulthood, this was not the case.

Julia thought about how much she loved her daughter and the thought of losing her was almost too much for her to bear. Nicole was a special treasure to her. A gift in her life that was precious. Nicole's spirit was obvious to all. Julia loved when Nicole would enthusiastic about literature, Ancient History, and philosophy, literature, poetry, mythology, and European history. Just put a book in front of Nicole, about such things would get so excited. Music also had the same effect on her.

She loved to sing and play classical music. Nicole's spirit was embed in classical thinking of the humanities and arts. How her daughter glowed when she was able to discuss those things. Nicole made those subjects has a feeling that they were alive and full of passion. Nicole made history passionate, literature-exciting, and music intoxicating. Both she and Barnabas had missed much of time with her in recent years doing that. But Julia now in reflecting saw it was that babbling made Nicole's spirit alive. And that was good for her. Julia of course enjoyed the conversations of that type with her daughter greatly. Julia now realized that was key to Nicole. That practice needed to be reinstituted for all of them in the house. It was done, but not done enough to suit Julia.

Julia remembered when Nicole was small she was in love with Lord Bryon and wanted to go back into time to be with him. She loved the type of man he was. It took much of persuasion not to get Nicole to do that. For at the age of fifteen, she actually could have done that. Julia wouldn't be surprised if Nicole's son name would be Byron named after Lord Byron. Julia remembered the countless days, Nicole stood in the drawing room reciting Lord Byron's poetry. Her parents of course had no choice but to engage in discussion with her of the poetry, its meaning, and what the idea of romantic love means. Nicole had a bright mind, inquisitive like Julia's, but more directed in the humanities rather than medicine. But Nicole questioned everything and was quite fiery like Julia was about medicine. And Nicole was not shy at all, very much like her mother. And Julia knew that. Julia always had to challenge her daughter's mind, for it was not stagnant at all. And Nicole loved to challenge Julia's mind. Nicole loved to put books of logic from the ancients such as Plato and Descartes, who believed in medicine ,,, but also had a mixture of philosophy and recognized certain importance of the soul of a human and its importance to be developed fully. Sometimes, Nicole thought her mother was like Descartes, too non believing of things, so she used the books to open and challenge Julia's thinking. And Julia of course in return to her daughter, importance of medicine. Julia had to make it exciting for Nicole."Never a dull moment with that child," thought Julia.

Julia had in adulthood to intrigue Nicole so her interest in medicine would continue. Julia was no fool and quite logical in her approach with her daughter. Just like with a child . Julia had to make medicine seem fun to Nicole. That was quite a challenge for Julia. Julia would spend time with Nicole doing experiments with her. She did this by making Nicole visually see what
medicine was., what research meant to fight disease. Nicole liked a good challenge, and Julia made Nicole aware that in medical research, that by the understanding of the cells what a miracle of life that seeing a human cell was under the microscope. One could fight change and alter the structure of the cells. Julia made the appeal to Nicole's love for art. By painting a picture, one could make a beautiful painting. By understanding the human cells, and being able to alter the structure of them, (1) it was fascinating to see the differences she could create and (2) it would save human lives. Julia made it like a puzzle to be solved. For Nicole thrived on mysteries, puzzles, unknowns that her mind could be so challenged that she would discuss it with Julia.

And as far as psychiatry was concerned, Julia found Nicole so excited about the human mind-particulary the id and the ego-being so contrasting to the human mind, but existing within the realms of a human being. Freud, Jung, B.F. Skinner fascinated Nicole' s mind. For Julia found she had a common bond with her daughter in that particular area. Nicole was also a brilliant psychiatrist. Julia saw her daughter was extremely gifted in understanding the minds of her patients with her vast knowledge of the humanities and medicine both. Although some of Nicole's methods seemed radical at Wyndcliffe , in the usage of humanities and music to treat patients she respected her daughter enough to allow it at Wyndcliffe. Julia was more of the traditional doctor, while Nicole was more experimental and non traditional in that respect. Nicole, challenged the patients. If they weren't challenged, she wouldn't let them rest, and she would try another treatment. And so far at Wyndcliffe, none of the patients had regressed. A sigh of relief to Julia. There were times, though Julia had to tell Nicole to use traditional treatment because all patients weren't responsive to treatment. Nicole had a hard time accepting this. But Julia refused to let the patients ever be compromised. But Julia had personally molded and followed her personal development in treating patients. Nicole respected her mother as a doctor and was very proud of Julia's brilliance. Julia had made sure Nicole followed her around Wyndcliffe in the treatment of patients from the time she was a small child. Nicole saw how her mother cared about the patients. And that sometimes being a doctor was not so easy, especially in the cases where she lost a patient. Julia in many cases had to appear tough but Nicole knew that was her mother's way. But that Julia cared about her work passionately. And for Nicole to see Julia passionate was exciting to her. As long as Julia took a medical journal and engaged
conversation with Nicole, she would be thrilled. Julia as well as Nicole enjoyed good debate and discussion. Rarely the topic was of little concern. Medicine with a focus on the development of the soul impassioned Nicole as well as Julia. The two of them had quite an effect on the other. It was though their minds were joined together sometimes. Julia was sometimes demanding, but Nicole loved the challenge otherwise she would be bored.

Julia had put her life into Nicole. That was obvious. But Nicole's greatest excitement came from Julia's natural love of Barnabas. In that area nothing had to be explained, Nicole saw the love from her mother's face. Julia melted when Barnabas walked into a room. It was that obvious. It was true that Julia had waited almost hopelessly for Barnabas to return to her. But he was slower to change, and his feelings to love Julia were much slower to develop. That was something Nicole didn't understand, she thought Julia to be the most wonderful woman and devoted to Collins. How could he have not return Julia's love immediately? You see with Nicole her heart ruled her mind sometimes, where Julia of course had much patience. Julia in her life knew she would never love anyone but Barnabas, she loved him so.

Barnabas and Julia because of the circumstances, treated Nicole's too delicately. And Julia knew they had spoiled her too much perhaps. But as a result Nicole had become so protective of Julia and Barnabas, that she would gladly give her life up for them without question. That was a great problem, for Nicole was so fearful, harm may come to them, that she wanted all harm to be directed at her away from her parents. Nicole therefore would do this herself without sharing with the others. Julia thought the daughter quite unrealistic in some areas of life and this was one of them. They told Nicole time and time again not to isolate herself when facing this type danger. And to Julia for Nicole to tell her husband she was leaving him to protect him was unacceptable. That was not how a marriage was to be handled. And to be leaving with no explanation was not acceptable either especially to Barnabas. He was furious with his daughter's handling of this matter. For she knew better. They had spent a great deal of time with her on this. And Nicole had disregarded their conversation and wishes. They had been working with her on this for years. So she did know better. But the impact negatively upon others was not excusable. Julia and Barnabas together held firm in this and would not go easy on Nicole for this. Now their was a baby and Nicole's husband to think of too.

And of course, Barnabas was Julia's life, anything that impacted his happiness unnecessarily, was dealt with immediately. For Nicole to upset the household in this way, caused Julia and Barnabas much heartache. Barnabas had become frantic when he heard Nicole's plans to leave Collinwood for a year. And to tell the truth Julia felt the same way too.

Julia now thought of how delightful it would be to see Barnabas reciting stories to his grandson by the fireplace in the drawing room of the Old House, and how that child too probably would babble to his grandfather about what had been read to him. She knew too well that little boy who would babble would be loved so.
