The crisis of Woodard's ghost had passed for the moment. All was peaceful again at Collinwood.
The boys were still in Boston with Willie, and had decided to stay longer to see the historical sites in the city, of course with their parents permission. In fact, they stayed at their former grandfather's home in Boston, which now belonged to Nicole.
Barnabas and Julia were at the Old House in discussion. Having returned from their their daily walk along the estate Colinwood, they had as usual for them, pulled out various books on art, philosophy, or logic, poetry, medicine among a variety of subjects and simply discussed it.
The sky was blue and clear. Flowers were out in full bloom. Collinwood was a large and wondrous splendor to walk through.
Julia, watchful of Barnabas, saw he was in a relaxed state and meant to keep him that way. She thought he had been through an ordeal with Woodard's ghost and she walked him to smile and be happy. She guardedly watched his various facial expressions to make sure he will feeling well, and calm. A usual preoccupation for Julia. And he was, he had a cup of tea, and was reading from a book of Shakespeare's works. That seemed to relax him. Julia thought this may be a good time to excuse herself to have a private chat with Nicole. Charles was spending the day at Wyndcliffe, working. He would be home in a few hours. Nicole, was at Seaview continuing to be involved in the restoration project of the house there and would be there for the entire day. In fact, she and Charles had planned for a private romantic evening for the two of them.
So, Julia thought she would quietly get out of the chair next to Barnabas, and held out of the house. She was determined to have a discussion with Nicole about various subjects mostly concerning Adam.
Julia quietly got out of the chair, however, her husband immediately caught glimpse of her leaving. She made an excuse for herself to leave. The brow of Barnabas' eye went up. He was frowning.
"Barnabas, I thought this would be a good time to talk a walk, I will be back in a few hours," replied Julia.
Barnabas suspected that something was on Julia's mind, and he was determined to find out. Usually during this time of day, Julia is usually studying her medical journals, fixing dinner, or listening to classical music someone not to far from Barnabas' eye . He was that devoted to her. Always watching for her to be at his side.He loved seeing her eyes gaze at him. And the boys were gone to Boston.
"Julia, are you going to Wyndcliffe, If you are I will go with you and take a book like I usually do."
"No , Barnabas, I have a personal matter I need to
attend to on the estate. I don't want you to
concern yourself. I really need to go before it gets dark. I will be home tonight."
Barnabas pulled his wife toward him and kissed her. Julia pulled back. One of those rare times.
"Barnabas, you are making things harder for me, I
really need to go and take care of this
personal matter" replied Julia.
"Julia, resisting me, when we are all alone, and we can have a romantic interlude. I don't understand Julia, what is wrong with you? Talk to me and tell me, he begged."
"Barnabas , you have been under much stress lately, I want to see you kept peaceful. So, I have to attend to this matter alone."
Immediately, Barnabas understood.
"Julia, does this have to do with our little talk with Nicole about Adam?"
Julia remained silent.
"I thought so, Julia you aren't leaving without me, We are going to talk to her together, do you understand. I won't have a repeat of 1795. "
Julia saw Barnabas now agitated and determined to go with her.
"No, Barnabas, she will have words with you, and upset you. I told you I could handle this myself. Look at you, you are already upset. I want you to relax."
"Julia, be sensible, how can I relax, you never know what that child is thinking?"
"The boys are so simple compared to her to deal with."
"Barnabas, she is not a child , she is a woman."
"And that my Julia, is what I am afraid of,and exactly why I am going with you. I will hear no more of it. Besides, I love you Julia, I want to be near you especially for matters as this. We share this things together Julia. Do not hide them from me. Allow me to comfort you my dear, you too have been through a trying time. Shall we go?"
He gave Julia a kiss, and offered his arm to her. He was still irritated over Nicole, but he and Julia would confront this together.
So Barnabas and Julia ventured toward Seaview to visit Nicole.
