Troubled in both her mind and heart, Katherine could not sleep. She kept going over the after dinner conversation she had with her father again and again. Never had he treated her in this manner before. Always he had been willing to listen to her thoughts. Even when their view points did not match, he never attempted to force his judgements over hers. Now tonight, unwilling to hear her out, he had spoken words she was still in shock over hearing him utter.
"Because I said so! That is why young lady!" decreed her father, before giving her a hasty kiss and wishing her good night.
Why was her father so against Nicholas? Surely he knew she would not blindly accept his order so meekly? He had to know that this screamed against the way he, himself had raised her. How could she make him understand this haunting connection she felt with Nicholas if he would not listen to a single word she had to say on the subject?
Sighing she rose from her bed. Leaving the tangled bedclothes behind and opening the french doors that lead to the balcony.
Moonlight danced along the white marble balustrade and a mist blurred the rose garden below. Sinking down onto the cold floor, Katherine remembered meeting Nicholas earlier. The gossamer connection she felt as they danced. How his heart seemed to whisper to hers of love long past and of their destiny to come.
Almost as if conjured by her longing for him, he appeared beneath her balcony. Coming to her feet, Katherine leaned down toward him, her lovely eyes welling up.
Plucking a single red rose, Nicholas strode to the ivy covered trellis and began to climb up to her.
