Katherine looked at the beauty of Venice through melancholy eyes. It really wasn't Benardino's fault that he was not Nicholas. Or that in Katherine's heart Nicholas was the one she longed to have showing her the glory of his home city. Delighting together as they viewed the frescoes glowing brightly in the sun, crimson, blue and gold. Holding her hand as they floated down the Grand Canal as it's waters changed from shimmering deep blue to silver under the many bridges.
Amazing at the of many styles of the sculptors and masons who made Venice what it is. Today she had seen so much. The statues of the Tetrarchs carved in red porphyry, the great arches holding up the pink and white Palace of the Doges and the superb bronze horses on the basilica facade to name a few.
Even the private homes reflected the Venetian's love of color, being rich and highly decorated. The fronts, many of which sported colonnades and loggias, proudly bright with mosaics that could easily be seen from the canal.
Katherine couldn't fault Benardino for being a bad guide, for he answered all her questions completely. He explained how and why that gondolas were build as they were, shorter by 10 inches on one side then the other. This made up for the sweep of the oar on one side only that enabled one man to both steer and row.
They stopped and visited many sites. At one such stop, they strolled through a large and magnificence garden. Chatting beside a small fountain, Katherine spotted Nicholas watching them intently from the shadows of a line of flowering trees. Benardino thinking her pinkening cheeks meant that the noon day sun was making her overwarm, lead her to a bench in the shade to rest while he fetched her a cool glass of lemonade.
Seconds later Katherine felt strong fingers caress the nape of her neck.
Sighing Katherine spoke to Nicholas from behind her fan. "Nicholas, I must speak to you alone as soon as possible."
His low voice answered her quickly, "Benardino comes now with your drink. I will meet you on your balcony when you return to the palazzo. I love you my darling!"
