It took slightly longer to buy the groceries than Willie had planned. The boneless chicken brests were sizzling in two large skillets on the state of the art range. A large platter covered with a dish towel waited on the counter to drain the grease from them. A large portion of the solid oak counter was taken up by the array of fresh vegetables: broccolli, cauliflower, radishes, celery, green onions, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. A bowl of crispy fried bacon, chopped into small pieces cooled near by. Willie wanted this dinner to go well. He wanted to show Barnabas the modernizing of the Old House had been worth all the trouble and expense. At this moment Barnabas was enjoying a hot shower. Willie just had to laugh the way Barnabas had taken to his new master bathroom. He spent more time in there than would a teenage girl primping for a date!
Rinsing, cleaning, peeling, chopping and dicing at a furious rate, Willie quickly prepared the salad. Stepping back to admire the colorful salad in it's crystal bowl, Willie thought that should impress them. Willie put the salad in the refrigerator to keep fresh. And transferred the chicken to the warming oven. Next he started a large pot of water to boil on the range for the pasta. He almost dropped the pot when he felt eyes staring at him again. Spinning on his heels he scanned the kitchen. No one here. What is happening? God he couldn't take it if some new horror started! Just when life had become so much better. So much to look forward to. Was it just his nerves? Could it be that simple? No Willie was no stranger to the dark forces that haunted Collinwood and the Old House. He recognized the signs of trouble coming. A half remembered quote echoed through his mind. "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."
