After nine holes of golf, Julia and Roger decided to stop. Too many other golfers on the course intent on the game.
"Julia, let's get some sandwiches and things and have a picinic on the beach. I know a great place no one ever goes to."
"Sounds wonderful." replied Julia.
So half an hour later, Roger parked the car just outside Collinwood's main gate. Roger carried a large basket of goodies, he had had the chef at the country club prepare and Julia carried a large blanket from the car. At the beach, they walked to where a large out cropping of cliff almost reached the sea. Just around this Julia stopped and exclaimed, "Roger, it's beautiful!"
Some how this little cove must be sheltered from the worst of the elements, for the grass grew thick and green a few feet from the sand starred with patches of wild flowers. They spread the blanket on the grass and left the basket in the shade of a small tree to keep cool. Taking Julia's hand, Roger said, "come with me. I want to show you some thing that reminds me of you."
Up ahead on the cliff, growing a small pocket of earth grew a rose bush. Stubbornly clinging to life, where no one would expect a rose to be.
"How in the world did it get there?" asked Julia.
"Who knows. It's been there since I was a boy. I found this place one summer chasing my dog. Rascal, a black lab and terrier mix, loved to run better than anything. I looked up and saw the rose on the cliff."
"Why does it make you think of me?" asked Julia.
"When I saw the rose, I was tired and more than a little angry, because Rascal had ran off yet again. The sight of that rose made me feel peaceful and more than a little awe struck. Looking at you has always made me feel the same way."
