"To Have And To Hold"

While Willie was being rushed off to the emergency room, some of the residents of Twylyght Tyme were enjoying a leisurely day at the movies. There were many fun outside activities available for them during the week. Regular shopping trips were scheduled, as well as excursions to local attractions. And as long as plenty of notice was given, the activities director would even take residents to visit friends and relatives. But today the main attraction was "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid."

Of course there was a long line at the theater which seemed to be going nowhere. But Mildred Stoolfire didn't mind. She was standing right next to the movie's poster, which she studied with delight. Butch and Sundance were running with their guns blazing. Even the sepia color couldn't hide how handsome that Paul Newman and Robert Redford were. Mildred may be old and married, but that didn't stop her from admiring a good-looking man or two. Off to the side in black and white was picture of Mr. Newman and Katharine Ross riding an old timey bicycle. Miss Ross was precariously perched on its handlebars, the way Mildred and Otis used to do in their younger days.

She smiled when she thought of those carefree days. Then reached back and took a hold of her husband's privates. It was something they had always done even in their younger days. Back then she enjoyed being just a tad naughty with their little game, but nowadays it gave her comfort to know he was there. How much like Robert Redford he used to look. She gave him a playful little squeeze. Even now he was a very handsome man and Mildred knew that the other women at the home would like to have him for themselves. She had to really watch out for them, especially since Otis' had started to loose his mind.

There were days when her beloved husband wasn't quite sure who she was. And other times when he would mistake other women for her. It broke her heart to see him this way, but there were still times the old Otis would return his mind as clear as a bell. She lived for those times. No matter what, she loved her Otis, "'til death do us part" was what she promised. And it was a promise she intended to keep.

The line began to slowly move forward and Mildred proudly pulled along her hubby as she went. Otis should really get a kick out of this movie. He really loved westerns. She wore her best floral print and had her hair done up special for the occasion. They were nearing the entrance when Mildred suddenly noticed Nurse Parker in the parking lot, WITH OTIS! He must have wandered off. But then if Otis was in the parking lot, then WHO did she have a hold of?

She let go as it the man's parts were on fire. Mildred felt the heat rise in her face as it quickly turned a shade of red. The shame of her mistake made it hard to turn and face the man, but she knew she must. Gathering up her courage she turned to find a smiling Patty O'Brien. "I'm am so sorry Mr. O'Brien, I thought you were my husband."

Patty's goofy Cheshire grin grew even wider, but he said nothing. Mildred couldn't stand it anymore and fled the line to join her husband with Nurse Parker. On the way over a car drove by blasting out, "I want to hold your hand, I want to hold your hand." This was too much for Mildred. She just wanted to disappear, and looked forward to the sanctuary of the dark theater.

Slowly drifting out of the cloudy state of unconsciousness, Willie found himself in a strange darkened room. At first he couldn't remember where he was. Then the memories came flooding back to him. The fall from the ladder, waking up in the emergency room, and the pain as the X-ray technician moved his leg into a better position for the pictures. Finally being wheeled down the hall on a gurney. Then in a groggy drug induced state, hearing someone muttering something about inserting a pin.

He still felt incredibly sleepy, hardly able to keep his eyes open. He heard ghostlike voices in hallway, but could not quite make out what they were saying. Someone had left the door to his room open and the bright florescent light streamed into the darkness hurting his eyes. Squinting he gradually made out a figure of a woman passing by. This ethereal lady of light seemed to be searching for something. She turned and gazed right at him for the briefest of moments. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Reminding him of his favorite film star Gene Tierney. Her shiny brown hair came down in attractive waves above her shoulders. And perfectly arched eyebrows sheltered the most amazing blue eyes. She had full red lips that appeared just a bit pouty. Looking a bit embarrassed for having disturbed him, she gave him a nervous little smile before turning and vanishing into the light. Then he could fight the heaviness of his eyelids no more and succumbed to the peaceful lure of dreams.
