Later that night after Barnabas was sure the house had settled down for the evening he called to Carolyn. She came to him almost immediately. She looked as if she was lost in a dream. Her arms circled his neck and she leaned her head, giving him access to her throat. She leaned into his strength. He ran his had caressingly over her face, then brushed her long red hair from her neck and brought her to him as his teeth sank into her neck. He could feel her strength waning, but drank greedily; unaware that someone was watching. She collapsed at his feet when he was through. He turned away from her and returned home.
Julia rushed out of the shadows after he left. Willie had done as she had instructed and told her of their meeting. She had rushed out to find them, but once she found them she was afraid to intervene. Instead she had stayed hidden in the shadows until he had left. She bent over Carolyn, who had become paler than usual. She felt her wrist. Her pulse was barely detectable. She ran back to the house to find Willie. She had told him to stay in her room until she came back.
Willie was at Collinwood that night, his Aunt had invited him over for a warm breakfast, which he had greedily eaten as soon as he had called Julia. Now he sat in Julia’s lab surrounded by strange vials and tubes. Suddenly someone shoved the door open it was Dr. Hoffman. Dawn began to stream thorough the windows. “Come Willie! Quickly!” She demanded, bring along her black bag.
“Is Carolyn ok?” he asked in fear.
“No Willie, she is not ok.” Julia grabbed his hand and the two went out into the misty morning. Carolyn was lying just behind the bushes, blood dried on her tender throat.
“Oh God Doc! What did he do to her?” Julia motioned for Willie to help carry her.
“But where are we gonna take her?”
“There is an old shed, a garnder’s shed over here. It will suffice till we can move her elsewhere. We can’t take her to Collinwood yet. I have work to do.”
The old shed was in horrible shape outwardly, but instead it had a bed and a cozy fireplace and a small desk. Many a Collins had came here to escape from the world, or allow the storms of love to move over head. Julia noticed a small portrait of a young woman hanging on the wall, but thought nothing of it.
Carolyn lay on the bed, at deaths’ door. She truly was dying this time. “Willie, make sure that no one is coming.” Julia pulled out a needle and tied a piece of cloth around Carolyn’s arm. The vein that appeared was faint; she gently pushed the needle into the skin, hearing a slight moan come from the girl. After securing the blood sample Julia motioned for Willie. “Bring your truck around. We must transport her to a hospital immediately!”
