Vicki looked in on David before she went to her room. He wasn't sleeping,
but instead was sitting up in his bed. "Shouldn't you be asleep?" Vicki asked
as she approached the bed. He laid down when she reached the bed, and she pulled
the covers over him.
"Carolyn's going to be OK isn't she?" he asked looking up at her with large
worried eyes. "She won't be like Daphne, will she?"
Elizabeth and Roger wanted to keep Carolyn's condition as much away from David
as they could, but it was hard to keep anything away from him. He always had
ways of finding things out. It had taken him a while to recover from Daphne's
death and resurrection. They didn't want to upset him again. "Of course she'll
be OK. Dr. Hoffamn's taking very good care of her. Nothing's going to happen."
He looked up at her trustingly. She kissed him on the forehead and said, "Now
get some sleep."
As she left David's room her thoughts returned to Carolyn. She had seemed so
week and pale in the hospital. Vicki hoped that she really would be all right.
What if the same thing happened to her, she thought, and touched the cross at
her neck. Wouldn't he kill her, just as had all the others, despite, or maybe
because of her resemblance to Josette?
When she found her own room her thoughts turned to Quentin. He would come to
her tonight, and that thought somehow made her feel safer. She could still feel
Quentin's embrace as she prepared for bed, still wearing the cross that she
had worn earlier. She was anxious for when Quentin would come to her tonight.
History seemed to be repeating itself. Just as Josette had left him for Jeremiah,
Vicki would leave him for Quentin. Barnabas couldn't let that happen. He waited
until he was sure that Vicki was in her room sleeping, then he moved silently
up the steps to her room. He entered her room and knelt by her bed. He looked
down at her for a moment as she slept.
When he was just inches from her, she started to move. She woke up slowly and
found Barnabas standing over her. His eyes glowed red in the dark room. Her
hand immediately reached up to the cross she had wore, only to find it gone.
She turned away from him, attempting to run from the bed, but he held her in
place. She struggled uselessly against his iron like hold. She was trapped.
His weight sank down on top of her. She screamed for help, but there was no
one close enough to hear.
She was frozen with fear as he brushed the hair from her neck. She knew what
was about to happen, and she was powerless to stop it. She screamed again as
she felt the sharp pain as his teeth tore into her neck. He drank from her until
the pain turned to numbness. She gasped as an unexpected rush of pleasure coursed
through her. She felt a burning start inside her as her need started to build.
Only then did he release her. "You belong to me now," he said and then he left
the room.
