Elliot rushed over to Collinwood, afraid for Julia. Her phone call had sounded
so urgent. He wished that he had been more insistent that she spend a few days
at his apartment. He also feared his plans would all be ruined if Angleique
suspected what they were going to do. Mrs. Johnson answered his knock at the
door. He was able to find Julia alone in her room. "Elliot," Julia said surprised
to see him there. "Has something happened?"
"Your call sounded urgent, so I came right over."
Julia review in her head their last conversation in her mind. She had told him
she had talked to Elizabeth and convinced her to allow them to perform the ceremony
that Elliot wanted to have. She couldn't think of anything that sounded so urgent
as to make Elliot believe he had to come over. "I'm not sure what you're referring
to."
"When you called me back and said that you thought Angelique suspected something."
He saw the puzzled look on Julia's face and realized what had happened. "It
wasn't you that called, it was Angelique. She wanted to get me here."
"She's going to do something tonight. Elliot, can you and Maggie perform the
ceremony you had planned tonight?"
"I haven't had time to show Maggie what needs to be done, but we can try." They
phoned Maggie, who said she would be there as soon as she could.
Angelique gathered her coat around her as she left Collinwood and went into
the cold Maine night. She walked out into the woods, carrying a package with
her. She was going to invoke Dinclinsin, the punisher. He was a Loa, a voodoo
spirit that would aid her in her plan for destruction.
To contact Dinclinsin she needed to be closer to nature, and away from anyone
who may see what she was doing. She took off her coat to reveal a red robe.
She took a bottle of rum from her package and sprinkled it on the ground. She
reached back into her package and took out cornmeal. With it she drew an intricate
pattern on the ground. She knelt on the grown in front of the pattern she had
just made, looked up at the sky and chanted in French. This was an attempt to
contact the Legba. It was only through him that any of the Loa could be contacted.
When she felt that the Lagba had been contacted she took out the cornmeal again
and drew another elaborate pattern on the ground. She knelt in front of this
and repeated a different chant in French.
When she was finished she rose up put her coat back on and walked toward the
edge of the woods. She was hidden from sight, but close enough to see if anything
was going on in Collinwood. She watched as Maggie pulled up and smiled. She
hadn't planned on Maggie coming, but she was glad she was here. It would just
be one less person to interfere with her.
