Subj: A Return to the Shadows part 31

Julia approached the old house looking for Carolyn. She was sure this was
where Carolyn had been going. Julia thought about all that Carolyn had said
in the hospital earlier. Carolyn had remembered everything that happened to
her. Julia was afraid that she had decided to confront Barnabas. As she climbed
the steps to the home she was relieved to find Carolyn standing outside, looking
at the door, as if trying to decide what to do now. "Carolyn, what are you doing
here?" Julia asked. Carolyn turned as if startled.
"I want to see him," she said.
"It's a little frightening is it, facing him like this isn't it?" Julia asked
hoping it was fear that was keeping her from going inside. "He almost killed
you once. What would stop him from trying again? Only this time he'll realize
that you remember his secret. It's a threat to his survival."
Carolyn seemed to be thinking of all this. Julia could see different emotions
cross her face, fear, anger, then finally determination. "I want to see him,"
she said with a steely edge to her voice. She turned from Julia and walked the
rest of the way to the house, before Julia said anything else that could change
her mind.
"Carolyn!" Julia called as she ran after her. She stared in horror as the door
opened almost instantly at Carolyn's touch. She saw a figure silhouetted in
the dark behind the door. She was relieved when she saw Willie step out into
the light. He looked surprised to see both of them.
"Carolyn, you're alright."
"I'm fine," she answered. "Where's Barnabas?"
"He ain't' here now. You'll just have to come back later."
She looked as is she didn't believe him and would have pushed past him into
the house. Then she seemed to changer her mind. "Fine," she said. She turned
away from Willie resigned that she would have to wait a little while longer
to confront him. "But I'll see him sooner or later."
"Thank you Willie," Julia said after Carolyn had left. "Is he really gone?"
"Yes," he said simply.
Julia opened her mouth to ask where he'd went, then thought better of it. She
didn't really want to know.
"Carolyn will be alright won't she?"
"Yes, she'll be fine if I can keep her away from Barnabas."
