Evening came. It had only been a few hours after sundown, and already Barnabas was becoming impatient. “Where is he?” Barnabas thought. “He should have been here by now. What if something’s happened?” Only then did was there a knock at the door. He hurried to the door and found William on the other side. “Where’s Vicki?” he asked in place of a greeting.

“You must be patient Mr. Collins. I want the money first, then I’ll take you to Vicki.”

“How do I know she’s safe?”

“You’ll have to trust me,” he said with an ironic smile, thinking of the last conversation Barnabas had with Vicki. “You needn’t worry she’s perfectly safe.”

Vicki heard a key grating in the lock of the room she was in. She stood up from her position on the bed. Lena walked in the room. “You know, it’s a shame. You and Barnabas Collins could be happy together right now if it wasn’t for William and me,” Lena said with a smile of triumph.

“What do you mean?”

“What he is now is due to me,” she said with the fire of vengence in her eyes. “It happened a few days ago. I turned him back into a vampire.” She flashed her sharp fangs at Vicki. “I did it because of what he did to me a few years ago, shortly after he showed up in town. I wanted to die when I woke up and discovered what I was, but William wouldn’t let that happen. He took care of me. A few weeks ago I found out that Barnabas Collins gets to walk free and lead a happy life while I was still trapped in this miserable existence.”

“Then this was all a set up. It wasn’t really the money you wanted.”

“No, but William would have let you go after he got it. I can’t do that.” She advanced menacingly on Vicki. Vicki felt the wall behind her, and slid along it, away from Lena. She felt wetness on her check as she realized the hopelessness of her situation.
