Vicki’s relationship with Barnabas had come to a halt since they agreed to take it slow. She felt alone now. Now that he was again vampire he seemed to be afraid to be near her. She could understand him and agree with him, but it didn’t help when the only time she saw him they were surrounded by the family.
Barnabas was surprised to see Vicki at his door so late. It had seemed like so long since he had seen her alone. He had missed her so much that he couldn’t help but smile when he saw her. “This is a terribly late time for a visit. Is something wrong?” he asked her as she entered the house.
“I couldn’t sleep. I had a bad dream.” He listened patiently while she described her dream. “It seemed to be so real, and so frightening. I can’t get it out of my mind.”
“It was only a dream. You shouldn’t let it get to you so much.”
“It seemed so real. I couldn’t just forget it. Even the cave under Widow’s Hill looked like it did in my dream. I won’t be able to sleep until I’m sure it was only a dream.”
“This dream was really disturbing wasn’t it?”
“Yes, I’ve never seen anyone die before.”
“I’ll help you.”
Vicki could feel a chill pass through her as she walked onto the beach again, afraid of what she may find. It was just a dream, she told herself. They reached the base of the cliffs. Barnabas climbed onto the rocks, then helped Vicki on them. He reached around the side of the cliff until he found the cave. He grabbed the inside, and pulled himself inside. Once inside he reached back to the rocks and helped Vicki inside.
At first they saw nothing but the stony interior of the cave, but the cave extended further into the cliff. As they started to walk into it Vicki felt more secure that they wouldn’t find anything.
Barnabas shined the flashlight further into the cave
“I see something,” he said as the beem from his flashlight caught something.
Vicki stood in shock and horror as they came closer to skeletal remains. “This
doesn’t mean
anything,” he said. “This could be anyone.”
“But in my dream she was hit on the left side of her head. There’s a matching hole in that skull where the wound would have been. There’s also the locket. In my dream she was wearing a gold locket with a floral patter engraved on it.” She hesitantly took a step toward the skeleton and took the locket that had still remained around its neck. “It’s the same one.” She stared at the locket as if she was seeing the dream again.
Barnabas turned Vicki around to face him. “This can’t be true. I’m sure when morning come you’ll see that.”
“Let’s just get out of here.” They left the cave with Vicki still holding onto the locket.
