Part 2 of ?

Vicki woke up just in time to see Sheriff Patterson driving away with Barnabas. She hurried outside toward Collinwood. Once inside she quickly found Elizabeth Stodard. After a quick explanation was generous enough to let Vicki borrow her car.

Vicki immediately went to the police station. Once there she had to wait a half-hour before anyone would talk to her. They then refused to tell her anything except that the detectives were talking with Barnabas. She stayed around the police station until noon, when she had finally been told that he had been arrested. They wouldn’t tell her why he had been arrested, but she was finally allowed to see him.

A guard led her down a long hall to a cell Barnabas sat miserably. As the door opened he looked up relieved to see that Vicki had come. “You came,” he said once she was alone with him.

“I woke up in time to see Sheriff Patterson driving away with you. I was so worried that I rushed straight here.”

“I’m glad you came.”

“I don’t understand what you’re doing in here.”

“Someone was murdered last night. They found his body close to the old house. They think that I murdered him.”

This came as a shock to Vicki, because she knew that he wouldn’t have done it. “But that’s impossible, you wouldn’t murder anyone. I know that you wouldn’t.”

He was touched by her belief in his innocence. He brushed the side of her face with his hand. “I’m glad that at least you think so.”

“Anyone who really knew you would think so. You don’t belong in here. I wanted to post your bail, but they told me I couldn’t until after the arraignment. Don’t worry, I’m going to make sure that you out of here.”

She gave him such a look of faith that he felt humbled by it, but there could be trouble if she tried to find the real murderer. “Vicki, you don’t have do anything for me. Your belief in me, and being here for me is enough.”

“You’ve always been there for me when I needed someone. You’ve also saved my life many times. You’ve done so much for me in the past. I want to do this for you.” He wanted to tell her not to do anything. She would be defenseless. He couldn’t watch out for her while he was locked up in here.

She gave him a look of such trust and faith, he felt overcome by his feeling for her. He couldn’t resist the urge to pull her to him and kiss her long and with all the tenderness and passion that he had held inside for so long. She was caught off guard by his actions, and completely unable to resist him. Once they broke apart and returned to reality Vicki was left stunned and unable to completely understand her feelings or what she wanted. She only knew that she needed to get away. “I’ll be back as soon as I can,” she said as she turned and hurried out of the cell. He wanted to protest as she left him, but all he could do was watch her go.

After leaving the jail Vicki drove around Collinsport for an hour, and was no more sure of herself that when she left Barnabas. She thought of him again, sitting helpless in the jail cell. No matter what else she did she couldn’t desert him now, when he needed her. She had to help him.
