What Could Have Been

Part 7 of ?

There was still some daylight left when Vicki returned to Collinwood, so she decided to start her search. Grant had been found close to the house, near the edge of the woods. So that’s where she went first. She made her way through the woods, toward the old house. It was just outside the woods that she found an enclosure sectioned off by yellow tape. She got an eerie feeling as she crossed the yellow tape the police had put up around the murder scene. She couldn’t help thinking that this was the spot where someone had died. Vicki pushed such thoughts about death to the back of her mind and dropped to the ground to search through the grass. She searched the tape-enclosed area and the surroundings for an hour. It was starting to get dark, but she still wanted to look in the woods. As she started to move into the woods she saw something moving. She looked up and saw a shadowy form move into the woods. She remembered Barnabas talking about seeing a vague shadowy form in the woods the night Grant was killed, so she quickly went into the woods hoping to find out the identity of the mysterious entity. She followed it behind trees and around rocks. It was always just beyond plain view, just a few steps ahead. If only she could get just a little bit closer she was sure she that she would be able to see who it was. It walked away, seemingly unconcerned that it was being followed. It took her in far into the woods, in circles, and to spots that didn’t seem at all familiar. Vicki thought that even if she were ever able to catch up to the mysterious person, she would be hopelessly lost. It seemed like she had been walking for hours, so she stopped for a second to rest. In that second the vague form disappeared. She rushed over the spot where she had last seen it, but found nothing. She turned around in a circle. Not only could she not see what she had been following, but she also didn’t recognize where she was.

Vicki started to walk off to her left, hoping that would lead her to something familiar. That was when she heard something. It was a woman’s voice, and it was calling her name. The voice almost sounded familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it. It seemed to be coming from all around her.

“Vicki,” it said, “I’m over here.” It seemed to be coming from behind her. She turned around and walked toward the voice thinking that she would find the person she had been following. She ran through the woods toward the voice, which was still calling to her. She ran into a clearing, still following the voice. Fog had rolled in by this time, but she ran through it toward the voice. She could see very little in front of her and suddenly felt the edge of a cliff beneath her. She reached out for something to hold onto as she fell though the darkness. Her hands came into contact with the edge of the cliff. As she hung there she discovered that she had fell off Widow’s Hill.

“Help me!” she called into the night. She looked below her, but could only see the same thick fog that had kept her from seeing Widow’s Hill. She screamed out again, hoping that there was someone close by. She desperately hung there until she felt her fingers start to slide off the rock she was clinging to. She screamed out again, certain that no one was around to here
her.
