Mary entered the room and walked toward her. “Did you know that Grant taught Chemistry and Pharmacology? I learned quite a lot from him.” She produced a syringe. “This was how I killed Grant. I used his knowledge against him. He didn’t even suspect anything until it was too late.”
“What are you going to do?” Vicki said backing away from her.
“I had planned the same fate for you that I did for Grant, but you’re smarter than him. When you discovered who I was I saw that you wouldn’t let me get close enough to you to do an effective job. That’s fine though. I’ll just have to resort to something else.” She put the syringe away, and retrieved a pack of matches. She walked to the back door, proceeded to light a match, then set the whole book of matches on fire. She tossed it toward the opposite doorway where it landed on the carpet, which immediately caught fire.
She turned to leave when a figure appeared in the doorway. She was forced to back up and let him in. “You?” she said as Barnabas came in, “You’re supposed to be in jail.”
“No doubt I have you to thank for my being in there.” He looked around and took note of the fire, which was burning in the next room and quickly climbing up the walls and moving into the kitchen. Mary made an attempt to move past him through the door, only to have Barnabas grab her by the arm. “Vicki, wait for me outside.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to have a talk with Mary. I want to make sure she gives me some answers. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” She reluctantly moved toward the door. She screamed and quickly stepped back with fright as a flaming timber fell in front her followed by fiery debris. “Vicki are you hurt?” Barnabas asked with a great deal concerned.
“No, I’m alright,” she said as she discovered a glowing ember had fell on her coat, and was starting to come to life. She quickly took off her coat and quickly stomped out the small blaze. She coughed as she had taken in a great deal of smoke from the fallen beam. The timber had fell across a counter top on one wall to the floor against the opposite wall, effectively blocking her exit.
“Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to get you out,” he said looking around unsuccessfully for something with which to break the timber.
As Vicki backed further away from the fire she stumbled over a loose tile. She looked down and found an opening down into a basement. She didn’t, however see a ladder. She looked up to see the floor above her on fire, and ready to collapse on top of her. She quickly dropped down into the hole. She landed hard on a concrete floor. She had been followed by some of the fiery debris, which burned itself out upon hitting the cold hard concrete. She looked above her to find the hole was covered with the burning rubble.
“Vicki,” she heard Barnabas ask again, “are you alright?”
“I’ve think that I’ve hurt my leg,” she said as she felt it start to throb, “but other than I’m fine.”
“I’ll find a way down and get you out.” He turned to Mary, who he still held.
“How do I get down there?”
“There’s a door under the staircase. It’s through there,” she said as she pointed through a wall of flame in the next room.
