Communications Officer Uhura sat quietly at her com station. The news of the extraordinary finding made on Earth, was a big shock to her. One of her ancestors, Josette duPres, who everyone thought had died in 1796, was still alive. How could this be possible?

"I realize that this must something of a shock to you," Captain Kirk said. "The scientists at Star Fleet Command are also at a total loss to explain this."

Spock walked on to the bridge. He appeared to be lost in thought. "Captain, in the year 1796, Josette was called back from the grave by a man named Barnabas Collins. He was suffering from a disease that we know as nocturnalism. Victims of this rare disease, can only come out at night. They have an abnormal need for blood supplementation. Which usually means that they attack other people and feed on their blood."

"He called her back from the grave?" Captain Kirk asked. "Spock, how can that be?"

"It is not logical," Spock replied, "And it follows no natural laws, but nevertheless, it appears to have happened."

"Barnabas Collins loved my ancestor," Uhura said. "He met her on the island of Martinique. The duPres family had a very large plantation there. That was where the family connection came for me. There was a slave girl who lived on the duPres plantation. She secretly became the lover of Andre duPres, Josette's father. They had a child, which, was my direct ancestor. His name was Toby. Years later, Toby, escaped from Martinique, returned to Africa, and started the family name Uhura, which means freedom."

"Spock, do you mean to tell me, Josette actually returned from death?" Captain Kirk asked.

"She returned," Spock replied, his face calm like a statue, "But there was one very unfortunate result. The fall from Widow's Hill had disfigured her, almost beyond recognition. Barnabas was shocked at her appearance and asked her to return, to her grave. Josette tried, but found that it was impossible. She found herself among the living dead, whether she wished it, or not."

"Where has she been all these years?" Captain Kirk asked. "After all, it is now the twenty-third century, five hundred years later."

"She lived in the caves under Widow's hill," Spock replied, "Having no need for food, water, or, anything. She stayed in hiding."

"Amazing," Captain Kirk said.
