Collin's Cannery
~~~
Norman Penny sat in the breakroom. He had just bought a sandwich out of the machine. "Boy, I tell ya," he said to his friend, Howard Grundy. "These sandwiches really suck. Two dollars for a slice of ham pasted onto white bread that tastes like paper."
Howard was sipping a coke. "Have you seen them?" he asked.
"Who...?" Norman asked. "Oh, you mean the union people down near the front gate. Yea, I saw them...signed a card, too."
"You did!" Howard said. "Aren't you the least bit afraid that Mr.Collins will fire you?"
"If he does," Norman replied, "I'll have his rich ass in court. I swear...I will."
Barnabas sat in his office, thinking. 'Vicki is so sweet, but I wish she hadn't allowed that woman to stay at our house. Julia didn't say much about it, but I could tell, it bothered her. This woman could be a witch...for goodness sakes!'
"Barnabas," David Collins said, walking through the door, "they're back."
Barnabas walked down the long sidewalk to the employee's parking lot. He was furious. The Collins cannery had always been a leader in employee benefits and the pay scale was more than generous. "I want you to leave my property, right now. If necessary, I will call Sheriff Patterson and you will find yourself in jail," he said raising his wolfhead cane.
Samantha Tate smiled, pushing back her long red hair. She wasn't breaking the law and knew it. Her union of dock prostitutes was getting stronger every day. "Mr.Collins, we have every right to be here. Your workers seem to be very interested. It will be time for a vote soon. Hopefully, the Dockies union will have some new members, the workers of Collins Cannery."
"Like hell, they will," Barnabas sneered. "I'll close this cannery, before it becomes unionized.'
"Barnabas," David said, walking behind him. The young foreman had a worried look on his face. "You have a phone call, it's the Mayor, there's been a problem at Miranda's school."
"All right," Barnabas said, "tell him I'll be right there." 'What next? he thought to himself.
Samantha Tate, Judy Baker and Sarah Browning, watched Barnabas walk away. They weren't going to give up, for no other reason than the past. The memory of their ancestors, Ruby Tate, Sophie Baker and Maude Browning wouldn't allow it. They hated the Collins family and thought it was time, someone put them in their proper place.
