I sat in my banquet room surrounded by the three women. They had come into my life so mysteriously. But now the mystery deepened.

"Victor," Xena said softly. "After nightfall, you enjoy looking at the sky. Do you ever think about the other possible worlds that are out there...hidden among those twinkling lights?"

"There is nothing," I said, laughing. "But the campfires of slain warriors. Each day, when the twin Suns move to the other side of the sky, we can see the fires of those departed from this world in valor."

"You are wrong," Dana Scully said. "Those fires are suns, surrounded by worlds, some similar to this one."

"What are you saying?" I laughed. "If that is true, why don't they burn as brightly?"

Meanwhile, in the forest of Cockaigne, demons, warlocks, and other creatures of the darkness danced naked around a blazing fire.

"When are we going to storm the castle?" laughed Carl Collins. "And conquer the King of Dullness, Victor...the log." He sat next to Angelique. His face frozen in a grotesque grin.

"Wait," Edward Collins said, "we must wait. There certain considerations to be made...how do we divide the treasures contained within." He raised his eyebrows. "Perhaps, I should consult my attorney, Evan Hanley."

Evan glanced up. He was standing by the flame, wearing a black robe, playing a dulcimer. The music was strange, both loud and quiet, seeming near and distant. "Yes, I will begin the proceedings...draw-up all necessary paperwork. We shall be ready."

"Enough," shouted Angelique. " I didn't bring you all back so that you could think about gold. We must have one purpose...and that is to destroy Victor North."

Deep underground, a small creature listened to the rumblings and talk from above. He wore a red conical cap, a mantle of green cloth. A sour look was on his face. "I don't like the sound of this at all," Barnabas said. "That witch is up to her old tricks. How I detest her!"

"Please forget about her," Josette said. "Years ago when she cursed us...at least one kindness was allowed. We are together." She was burning brightly, her light phosphoric, a small fairy dressed in a gown of blue.

"We must warn Victor," Barnabas said, running through the tunnel "Perhaps we can help."

"Imagine, a world with creatures of complete perfection. Being immortal," Seven of Nine said, "they had nothing to do but the pursuit of science, which they developed to the highest level."

"At first they were happy," Xena added, "but then it came upon them like a plague, dampening their spirit."

"Boredom, terrible dullness, "Scully continued. "They were frozen in despair...unwilling to do anything." She smiled. "But then one day, little beams of energy reached their planet. These beams had traveled through countless galaxies, taking detours around black holes and supernovas. These little bits of energy changed everything."

I took a deep breath and sighed. This tale was becoming too fantastic even for me to believe. "And what pray tell, were these little beams?"

"Television signals from a planet that no longer existed," Scully replied, "a planet called Earth."
