Chapter Three
What Dreams May Come

Sam Evans looked around the cottage. He carried his last suitcase down the stairs.

"You're going already," Maranda asked him.

"Yes," he said to his wife.

"Can't you leave tomorrow, when the weather clears up?"

"I wish I could," Sam said. "I'll call you when I get to the hotel."

"Did you say goodnight to Maggie?" she asked.

"I was just going to do that," he said, turning and went back up the stairs. He opened the bedroom door and went over to his daughter's bed. He leaned forward and brushed back the hair on her forehead.

"Goodnight Pop," she said sleepily.

"Goodbye honey," he said. He closed the door and went back downstairs. Maranda was waiting for him by his suitcases.

"You won't forget to call?" she asked.

"No I won't," he said, "I'll call you the minute I get to the hotel.

"All right hten," Maranda said.

"Goodbye Maranda," he said and kissed her on the cheek.

"Goodbye Sam," Maranda said as she watched him get into the car.

Sam got out of the car and put the keys into his pocket, and went into the apartment building. He stopped at apartment number 67. He took his keys out and unlocked the door.

It was empty, except for two suitcases in the middle of the room.

"Sam," exclaimed a happy voice, "the moving men took all the stuff this morning. I can't believe it's all gone," she said as she snuggled closer to him.

"Are you ready Breann," he asked.

"Yes," she said smiling happily at him, he kissed her.

They drove in silence, "Are you happy about this," Breann asked.

"Of course. We both had to give up so much," Sam said.

"It will be worth it," Breann said.

"I love you," Sam said.

"Why don't you let me drive for awhile," she said.

Sam pulled to the side of the road and let Breann take the wheel.

He leaned back gratefully and was asleep a few minutes later.

"No, no, no," Sam mumbled in his sleep. Breann looked at him with concern, she brushed the hair off his forehead.

"NO," he screamed, and sat forward, wide awake. "Just a bad dream," he said when he saw Breann looking at him.

She smiled and took his hand, it was then when they heard the horn. Sam looked forward and saw only the headlights from the on coming car.

"No," Sam cried and grabbed the wheel, turning it the opposite way. Sam only heard Breann's screams as the car rolled down the hill, then everything went black.

Sam woke up outside, what happened? He looked around and saw the car, it was on fire, he managed to get on his feet. He felt groggy and stumbled towards the car, Breann wasn't there.

"Breann where are you?" he yelled. He had to find her, he turned and made his way to the road.

He stumbled through the forest, he could think of nothing else but Breann, and his daughter. Was this a sign for him to stay with Maranda? There was a fire not far off, maybe it was someone who could help him.

"Can you help me?" Sam whispered hoarsely.

The vagrant that was warming his hands over the fire turned and looked at Sam. The man's face turned white, he scrambled to his feet and ran off into the woods.

He must look bad, he hadn't been able to explain to the man that he had just been in an accident. How bad was he injured, he felt little pain.

He was on the road, he looked at his watch it was a little after midnight. He wished a car would come by. He had to get home, if Maranda was found, maybe they thought he was killed, but why did they leave the car like that?

He didn't know how long he had been walking, but finally a car slowed down.

"Hey are you crazy buddy, I can hardly see you on the road. Do you want to get yourself killed?"

Sam turned to the man, grateful that he would finally get some help. But when the man in the car caught sight of him, he slammed his foot on the gas pedal and drove off.

What was wrong with him? He must look like death.

He didn't think that he would ever get home, but finally he walking up the path to the cottage. The lights were on downstairs. Maranda was still awake then, he thought with relief. He tried the door but it was locked, the keys were still in the car, so he knocked on the door.

"Yes?" Maranda asked as she opened the door, when she saw Sam she screamed slamming the door in his face. He stood there in confusion, then went over to the window and looked inside.

Marnada was in another man's arms.

"What's wrong honey," the man was saying. "Who was at the door."

Sam couldn't stand it, Maranda had a lover, had she known about Breann, and this was just he way to get back at him?

He had to go to Breann, she would be there for him.

When he got to her apartment he knocked, please make her be here, he thought to himself.

"Who's there?" Breann asked as she opened the door.

"It's Sam," he said coming into the apartment.

"You can't be Sam," she said.

"Why is all the furniture back?" he asked.

"I had the movers bring it all back after the accident."

"The accident?" Sam asked.

"It was two years ago, today. It left me blind, and killed the only man I ever loved, Sam. So who are you?"

Sam jerked forward screaming "NO," Breann looked at him with worry on her face. "It was just a bad dream," he said.

Then a strange look came over his face. He knew what was going to happen, he had been through this already. He looked out the windshield and saw the car coming towards them. "No this can't be happening," he screamed. He grabbed the wheel and turned it, causing the car to plunged through the fence and over the hill.

Sam shifted in his chair, he and Breann had planned on leaving in two weeks.

"What do you want with us?" the young man asked.

"To show you what you are capable of," said the man in black.
