Chapter Two
Thank you Angelique, Josette said, as she lead Barnabas into the drawing room.
Is there anything you want me to do before I go for the weekend? Angelique asked.
No, thank you Angelique enjoy your holiday, Josette said.
Thank you, she said.
Good bye Angelique, Barnabas said smiling.
Angelique returned his smile, she was still smiling as she drove to her mothers house in Beauvais.
Would you like anything to drink?
Waters fine.
Sparkling or regular?
Sparkling water will be fine, Barnabas said.
Lemon, Josette asked.
Yes, thank you, he said as she handed him a glass.
I am so glad that you came, Josette said, sitting in the chair opposite him.
Why is that? he asked.
Well, Ive meet your father and his brother, but after talking to you, you seem like someone that I could actually talk to. You seem like the kind of person who would listen to what other people have to say.
My father and Uncle are a bit old fashioned, but once you get to know Jeremiah youd see that he is a good friend to have.
Im sorry, I didnt mean it like that, Josette said.
I know, Barnabas said smiling. So what do you do for fun?
I hope my daughter was beginning a good hostess, André duPrés said shaking Barnabas hand. Im sorry I wasnt here to greet you.
Oh dont worry about it, Josette was the perfect hostess, Barnabas said smiling at Josette.
Good, this is my sister, Natalie, André said waving his hand to the woman beside him.
Its a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Collins, Natalie said.
Please call me Barnabas.
What did you two do?
I showed Barnabas around Paris, Im only sorry we didnt get to see more. Im afraid you wont have enough time to see everything.
Im sure we could find the time, Barnabas said.
Up in his room he changed into his Tommy Hilfiger sweats. He took out his paper and began to write home, hed write four different letters.
Dear Sarah,
I arrived in Paris this morning. I was sorry that I missed you when I called. I know that you were looking forward to telling me about your project. I looked for something that you would like today, when Josette duPrés took me around, but I havent found the right thing yet. The duPrés home is very big. Josette told me that it once was a castle. If Collinwood and the Old House were put together, it would only be the size of the ground floor. There is a maze in the gardens, their gardens are so beautiful, the flowers are all so perfect. A lot of them came from Martinique, where Josette and her family came from. Perhaps I could bring you home some cuttings of the flowers.
Well I must go, be good.
Love your affectionate brother,
Barnabas
He addressed the envelope and set it aside to be sent and wrote the letters
to his father, mother, and his Uncle Jeremiah.
To be continued. . .
