Chapter Three

How long have you worked for the duPrés, Barnabas asked Angelique as they walked through the gardens.

I came with them from Martinique, my mother was Madam duPrés, maid, after Madam duPrés died my mother left. I stayed with the family to keep Josette company, they have been very kind to me, Angelique explained.

She had been surprised by Barnabas request, she hadnt been able to get him out of her mind. When she came back after her holiday, she was sure she saw happiness in his face when he saw her.

You have no other family? Barnabas asked.

No, I dont remember my father, it was always mother and I.

Im glad you agreed to come with me, Barnabas said turning to Angelique. He took her chin in his hand, and kissed her softly.

Angelique caught her breath. She hadnt expected this, but she had no desire to make him stop.

Im sorry, he said after they parted.

What are you sorry about? she asked, and pulled him to her.

After their walk in the gardens, Barnabas and Angelique exchanged many secret smiles. When they would walk past each other, they would touch longer than usual.

Barnabas would leave the house and met her after the duPrés would retire for the evening. They would walk the empty streets of Paris, freely holding hands. They hated to say goodbye to each other.

Barnabas asked her why they had to be so secretive about their relationship, she told him that she could get fired for getting involved with someone who had anything to do with the duPrés business dealings.

Come back with me Angelique, Barnabas said as they lay in his bed in the duPrés home, he had convinced her to come back after their night out. Come back to Collinsport, I dont know how I could go on with out you.

Oh Barnabas, Angelique said turning onto her stomach, her hair falling in her face. Barnabas reached over and moved it back, I would love to go with you, but I cant, not yet.

Whats stopping you? Barnabas asked.

I cant leave here, I need time to. . . Angelique tried to explain.

I understand, Barnabas said disappointed. When I come back will you come with me then?

Yes, Angelique said. Barnabas pulled her to him and kissed him, Make love to me again, she breathed.

The next day Angelique woke up early she dressed, and left the room as quietly as she could. She drove home and changed her clothes. When she returned to the duPrés, she found Barnabas and Josette talking. It was different than before somehow, their bodies were nearer than Angelique had ever seen them. She knew she had no reason to be jealous, after all it was her, and not Josette that Barnabas made love to last night. He had told her that he loved her, and wanted to take her home with him.

Why had she refused, it was silly, but she had promised her mother that she would not leave her until she died. She wished she could go with him, but he said that he would be coming back. She knew he would too, Josette had her file the papers that said that a member of Collins Enterprise would be required to come once a year, perhaps she would be able to visit him in Collinsport, if Josette went.

Im going to miss you, Angelique said holding Barnabas close to her. They were at her apartment. She had made him a farewell dinner, they were in her bedroom, the dinner was still on the table untouched.

I promise Ill call you everyday, Barnabas said. Now come back to bed.

The next day Angelique watched as an outsider, as her lover said goodbye to his families business partners. She longed to be able to throw her arms around him and kiss him, but she had to pretend that her heart was not breaking.

I had so much fun Barnabas, I hope well see each other again, Josette said.

Thank you for helping me find the perfect gift for my sister, I know shell love it.

Your welcome, I know that every girl wants a Paris made dress, I know that she'll look lovely in this."

Have a safe trip, Im glad I got to meet you, Natalie said. I only wish my brother was here to see you off. Im sure he would want me to thank you for coming.

Thank you for allowing me to stay in your home, Barnabas said smiling.

You will call when you get home wont you, Josette blurted out. I mean we would like to know that you arrived home safe.

Yes of course, Barnabas said.

To be continued. . .
