After her shower Angélique got dressed quickly. She made her way down stairs to Barnabas' room. There was a light on underneath the door, she knocked and waited for him to come to the door.
After a few moments Barnabas opened the door. "Angélique," he said surprised, "what do you want?"
"I need to talk to you," she said pushing her way in. "I can't do it anymore Barnabas. I can't pretend to be happy for you and Josette, I can't pretend that I don't love you, even after all that you've done," Angélique said throwing her arms around Barnabas, "I can't pretend that you weren't the best that I've ever had," she whispered and kissed him.
"Angélique we can't do this," Barnabas said pulling away from her, but suddenly he pulled her to him and kissed her. When they parted Barnabas saw the tears that fell down Angélique's cheeks. He wiped them away, then pulled her to the door that lead to his bedroom, she heard that he had the stereo on, it was playing The Best I Ever Had.
They made love several times that night, reminding Angélique of all their nights in Paris. As she lay in Barnabas' arms she felt as if she was whole once again.
At dawn she awoke and dressed quickly, she kissed him softly before she left. She was happier than she had been in quite some time, even after she had been planning her revenge. She could forget about everything now. He loved her, he had always loved her, and his relationship with Josette was the kind that his father wanted him to have.
She went through the day with the same smile on her face, nothing the Countess could do could take it away. Natalie had called Josette and found out that the bridesmaids were coming with Josette after all so rooms had to be prepared for them.
When Barnabas, his parents and the Countess went to pick Josette, her father, and the bridesmaids up, Angélique played "Connect Four" with Sarah and Daniel. Millicent and Jeremiah sat reading. Angélique wanted to be able to get along with Sarah when she became Mrs. Barnabas Collins.
Joshua called to tell them that they could have dinner without them because Josette's plane was delayed. The children also had permission to stay up late to meet Josette.
Angélique missed Barnabas she hadn't seen him all day, he had been at the office all day. Ben had come and given her flowers. He didn't remember anything of what she told him. She was glad she didn't have to have anything further to do with him.
She could still hear him whisper in her ear that he loved her. And that had been no spell, he loved her, and he proved it to her last night.
"It's your turn," Sarah said.
"Oh," Angélique said, "Sorry." They were back in the drawing room, they were now playing "Clue." Angélique was Miss Scarlet and she suspected that she was the killer, but she thought she'd just let one of the children win. She made her move, then it was Daniel's turn.
"I'd like to make a guess," he said.
Jeremiah set down the newspaper and took out the envelope that the children had put in his control, and said "Alright."
"I think its Professor Plum in the Kitchen with the lead pipe."
"Sorry Daniel," Jeremiah said.
"How much longer will they be Uncle Jeremiah?" Sarah asked. She had been very patient through dinner.
"Not much longer I should think."
"It's your turn," Angélique said. Sarah rolled the dice and moved the number of steps when she got into the room, they could hear the front door open.
"We're home," Joshua called out. Sarah jumped up, with Daniel right behind her.
"Sarah," Barnabas said, "I'd like you to meet Josette."
"Hi," Sarah said shyly.
"Hello Sarah, I've heard so much about you," Josette said after she gave Sarah a kiss on the cheek.
"Josette this is my cousin Daniel, and his sister Millicent."
Josette smiled and shook hands with Daniel, "Barnabas told me about your engagement, congratulations."
"Thank you," Millicent said.
The family moved into the drawing room. "Angélique," Josette said giving her hug, "How can I ever thank you."
"It was my pleasure," she said.
"Sarah, I'd like you to meet my very best friends; Therésè, Lousia, and Virginie. They're going to be my bridesmaids."
"I'm going to be the flower girl. I got my dress and my basket."
"I can't wait to see them," Lousia said.
"You all must be tired after the flight and the delay," Naomi said.
"I am a little tired," Josette said, "I almost forgot after all the excitement.
"I'll show you to your room," Barnabas volunteered. Josette said goodnight to everyone and followed him up the stairs, she turned back and said, "Angélique I want to talk to you tomorrow."
Angélique nodded as she watched them go up the stairs. "Angélique how did things go?" Therésè asked.
"Very well, everything is ready," she said.
"You've been such a help to Josette," Virginie said, "You're a bridesmaid too, right?"
"Yes, she asked me before I began helping her."
"Well you've done such a wonderful job. Would you like to help us with a little party we thought we'd have before the wedding?" Virginie asked.
"Sure," Angélique said.
"We thought that all the bridesmaid and the groomsmen could go out together with Barnabas and Josette before the wedding. We thought dinner and a movie would be fun. What do you think?" Lousia asked.
"I think that it's a wonderful idea."
"Great. Do you have the numbers for the groomsmen?"
"Yes, I got home numbers and their work numbers," she went over to the desk that she'd been working at. She brought over the list of the wedding party, and read off the names of Barnabas' friends, "There's Peter Bradford and Noah."
"We could invite Barnabas' uncle Jeremiah, then we all could have dates," Lousia said.
"Isn't that guy who works for Barnabas going to be in the wedding?" Therésè asked.
"Yes Ben is going to be in the wedding too," Angélique said.
"Barnabas mentioned you were dating. You two could go together," Lousia said smiling.
"Hey we can't forget about Peyton," Virginie said.
"Right, Josette's going to see her tomorrow so we can have her ask who she's bringing to the wedding," Therésè said.
"Thank you Angélique maybe we could go out for lunch while Josette's in New York with Peyton," Virginie said.
"That would be nice," she said.
Angélique watched them go to their own rooms leaving her alone, she waited for a half hour hoping that Barnabas would come down to her. Then she slowly walked up the stairs, she wondered if Barnabas was waiting for her in his room. She had to see him again. She had to know what he was going to tell Josette. She went up to her room and waited for him. She sat on her bed for hours, then finally she gave up and got under the covers and fell asleep.
At about two in the morning there was a knock on her door, she got up sleepily. "Who is it," she asked.
"Barnabas, let me in."
She opened the door quickly, glad that he came. She was glad that she was wearing her sexiest nightgown, instead of her usual t-shirt she usually wore.
"I was hoping you'd come," she said after she closed the door.
"Angélique I can't do this anymore. I don't know what happened last night, but my feelings haven't changed. I don't love you the way you want me to. I love Josette and I am going to marry her. I wish you never came because then I wouldn't have doubted what I feel for her. I am sorry, I am always hurting you, but please move on. Find someone else and forget about me."
"Barnabas you don't mean that," Angelique said.
"Don't touch me, don't talk to me again, just forget that I ever said I loved you. I made a mistake and for that I am sorry." Barnabas turned and left.
Angelique stood in the center of the room where he left her, then she turned falling onto the bed and screamed. Barnabas would not do this to her again, she thought. When she felt calm again she rose from the bed and went to the dresser. She took out Barnabas' shirt that she took that morning.
She spread it out onto the bed and whispered, "As balm to this figure, so my heart where animosity has grown, healing now impart."
When she was finished with her spell she put on her robe and made her way to Ben's room. She knocked, and waited some time before he opened it. "I need you Ben," Angélique said, he let her into his room. She told him what she wanted him that he would be her eyes and ears tomorrow. When she was done she let him kiss her, it was then that she realized that she needed him, but only to satisfy the hunger she felt. She could never love him, she need Barnabas, and she'd have to fight for him now.
To be continued. . .
