Joshua moved into the room, Barnabas turned and faced his father. Josette covered her mouth with her hands.
"How can this be?"
"It's all because of Angèlique," Barnabas said. "She's responsible for everything that has happened to this family, and it's all because of me."
"How can you. . . " Joshua began.
"How am I here standing before you when I should be dead in my coffin? I don't know, it is all part of the curse that she set upon me. I will never rest, and I am damned for all eternity to hunt in the night for human blood."
Josette's sobs grew louder, Barnabas turned, "Josette I cannot help myself, I do not want to make you suffer as I do, it is a pain that I would not want to inflict on anyone I love as much as you."
"You are responsible for the deaths in town?"
"Yes father, I am unable to control my hunger," Barnabas said.
Joshua Collins looked at his son with compassion, no matter what kind of monster his son had become, it was through no fault of his own, and he was still his son. Joshua pulled his son into his arms and hugged him. He would protect him.
"What am I going to do?" Barnabas asked his father.
"I don't know," Joshua said honestly, he had to think, everything was happening so suddenly. He had to think of what do to do about his son, and how Josette would explain to Naomi, the family, and anyone else, how she had gotten pregnant, by his son.
"Father, I can not live like this, I long to be free of this torture, but it would mean never seeing Josette again, and that is something that I could not bear."
"And what of Angèlique? I thought she was dead," Joshua said. "I saw her body."
"She can not be killed, she came to me, and told me that is was she who killed Ben and Sarah. She also warned me that she would kill Josette. She needs to be protected."
Josette looked at Barnabas, "I can not bear it if you stay away, I am not scared of Angèlique. She fears my love for you, it must be so. If not why hasn't she come to me before?'
Barnabas turned to her, "I don't know, but I wouldn't want any harm to come to you or to our child."
"I meant what I said before, I don't want to be separated from you. If that means I must become like you then I would do it."
"And that is something that I would never put you through no matter how much I would love to have you with me always."
Joshua interrupted, "Enough, Josette go back to Collinwood. I'll come to talk to you tomorrow."
Barnabas watched Josette leave. She was carrying his child, he could never make her like him. "What are you going to do?" he asked.
Joshua looked at his son. "I'm not sure yet, but I will not be the one to end your life. I cannot do that to you, son."
