(Reflections on what Barnabas must have thought shortly before the death of Nathan Forbes!)

Barnabas stood alone on a hill,
The hatred in him began to fill.
If more attention he had paid,
To the woman in whose bed he'd laid.

If only he had been more alert,
All loved ones would not have been hurt.
If he hadn't scoffed and felt absurd,
The words of witchcraft, when he heard.

If to his aunt he'd not been blind,
Her life he would see, not death to find.
If he'd been faithful, his virtue to save,
His love would not lie in a grave.

If understanding had been the tool,
With his Uncle there would have been no duel.
If he'd not gone to that witch's bed,
His precious sister would not be dead.

If not to the witch he had gone to play,
His cousin's mind would be right today.
If he had not betrayed his love for another,
He still would have his wonderful mother.

If he hadn't gone to Martinique,
He never would have met this Angelique!
If he had only stayed at home,
He now would not have to roam;

Each night from dusk till the sun rises,
More blood he craves and thus despises,
The existence with which he must abide.
Killing, taking, oh he wish he'd died!

And yet he knows he must go on,
To kill again before the dawn.
The hatred in him so strong he can't speak
If only he'd not met this Angelique!
