Angelique's head spun. She tried to take in all that her grandmother had revealed
to her, "but she has chosen you," her grandmother's words reverberated
in her head.
Seeing Angelique was stunned and still not comprehending the importance of the
matter her grandmother continued, "Angelique, I felt you were special since
the day you were born. Don't you see? The similarities between you and our ancestor
confirm this. The very fact that you married a man named Barnabas Collins and
now live here at Collinwood is a sign."
"Grandmother, do you understand what this means? I have not only married
into the Collins' family. I am a Collins by blood. Why didn't you tell me this
before?"
"To tell you the truth, I didn't know if you would believe me. I always
found it peculiar that you didn't have more of an interest in the occult. I
tried to involve you when you were younger. I thought that you would possess
a natural talent, a great power." Angelique's grandmother shook her head.
"That doesn't matter now. There is no doubt, you are the one Angelique
Bouchard has chosen. Perhaps after your service to her is over, you will embrace
the dark power that is your birthright."
Angelique stared at her grandmother in disbelief. For the first time in her
life she saw her grandmother as a stranger. How could she withhold all this
information from her? The one person she felt she knew best, she realized she
didn't know at all.
"Grandmother, I don't understand why you think this spirit tormenting me
is such an honor, but I am going to do everything in my power to rid myself
of the spirit of Angelique Bouchard."
Angelique's grandmother looked down for a moment, not able to look her granddaughter
in the eye. Then she opened her pocketbook, took out a small bottle, and poured
some fine white powder into her hand.
Angelique was even more perplexed by her grandmother's action. "What is
that?"
Angelique's grandmother brought her hand to her face and whispered, "Something
to make everything all better," before blowing the contents into Angelique's
face.
Angelique immediately stood to her feet, coughing, trying to expel the chalky
substance from her lungs.
"I'm so sorry Angelique. So sorry. I didn't want to do this, but it's for
your own good. She spoke to me last night in a dream. She told me this was the
only way."
Angelique, still gagging and frantically trying to brush the powder off her
face, started to stagger around the room. She finally comprehended the terrible
truth. Her grandmother was part of this evil scheme.
"You won't feel any pain Angelique. You will be in a soul sleep. It's the
only way, dear."
Angelique fell to the floor. She looked up and saw the blond haired spectre
standing over her. Soft laughter filler her ears as she stared into the face
so like her own. This was the last sight she saw as the blackness enveloped
her mind.
