Chapter 14
With a quick thrust, Jeb brought down the knife and plunged it into
the dirt. He fell to his knees and raked his hands through his hair.
Barnabas stared openmouthed for a moment. "I'm sorry," Jeb moaned.
"This is going to sound crazy, but I was so desperate to have Carolyn
back I called out for someone or something to resurrect her. A man
appeared to me and told me he would bring Carolyn back if I killed you
tonight."
"What was his name," Barnabas asked, expecting it to be Petofi.
Jeb looked up at Barnabas, surprised that he seemed to believe his
story. "His name was Nicholas."
Barnabas was obviously taken off guard. "Blair? I haven't even
spoke to him since he returned."
Jeb looked back at Carolyn's grave. "I would give my own life to
have her back, but I just can't kill another person."
Barnabas understood Jeb's grief. He recalled how he summoned
Josette back from the dead and how she had to show him how deformed her
beautiful face had become when she landed on the rocks in order to
convince him to send her back to her rest. That disturbing visage was
to be forever burned into his memory. He only knew one instance where
someone was resurrected successfully and that was Quentin.
"Wait here," Barnabas told Jeb and walked away from Carolyn's grave. He stopped
after he reached a distance where Jeb would not be able to hear him. Barnabas
swallowed and asked himself if he really wanted to go through with this. Then
he spoke, "Angelique, hear my call."
