Angelique knew the best way to proceed with her dastardly deed would best be served if she had someone else to do all the "dirty work" as it were. So, the servant needed a slave and it did not matter to her whether they were willing or otherwise.

She took mental inventory of the other servants employed by the Collins family and began her careful selection by an elimination process. "Plain-Jane" Phyliss Wicke would make a good slave, but her personality would not do for sneaking about. Although, no one really noticed when this young woman WAS IN a room, she also wasn't the type to slueth her way around completely unnoticed. No one noticed this person because she had all the social skills of a blank piece of parchment. She was great with children, but, no, she would not do for Angelique.

The gardners were out of the running since it would be difficult for them to explain their presence in the rooms of the house that were not exclusively the servants quarters. This pretty much disqualified the kitchen help as well, although the cook was allowed access to the upstairs areas. No, that woman would be more trouble controlling then she would be worth. Angelique had great powers of persuasion, but she needed to focus them in another more important direction at this time. Then her face took on that magnificent look of triumph! She knew who her next puppet would be! He did not have the run of the house, but he could go where she needed him to and not be overly conspicuous. As for personal character, there was not much to choose from. At least that was Angelique's opinion of the ex-convict, Ben Stokes.
