When David went upstairs, he walked past Amy's room and found her sitting on her bed.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

"Come downstairs later and we will do something."

"I will."

David went on to his room. He wondered what was wrong with Amy. She didn't seem like the same person who had gone to Collinwood. He didn't think she was as fun to be around as she had been. He went past Amy's door and saw it was closed. He was on his way downstairs when he met Mrs. Johnson in the hall.

"Mrs. Johnson, have you seen Aunt Elizabeth?"

"She's in the library, David."

"Thank you."

He went to the library door and peered inside. He saw his aunt with a book.

"Aunt Elizabeth?"

She looked up and saw her nephew standing in front of her.

"Yes, David?"

"I need to talk to you."

"What about?"

"About Amy."

"What's wrong with her?"

"Did she run away? She told me how unhappy she was living with her uncle, but she wouldn't tell me why."

"No. I called Sabrina and told her Amy was here. Is there anything else?"

"Don't tell Amy I talked to you."

"I won't."

Adam was still worried about why Nicholas had appeared in the mirror in the basement. He had finally realized why Barnabas had taken him with him. He wondered when he would be able to go home. He supposed he would be safer at the Old House. He figured that Barnabas would be there to protect him. He was afraid if Nicholas did come back and go to the Old House, Julia, Willie and Barnabas would be in danger. He knew that he would never be able to forgive himself if something happened to them because of him.

Barnabas got up and walked toward the door. Adam followed him. "Where are you going?" "Back to your house." "Do you want me to go with you?" "No, you don't need to. I'm going back to look in the basement. I'll be back." "If you aren't back in an hour, I'm coming to hunt you."

Adam handed him the keys to his house and car and Barnabas left.

When he arrived at Adam's, he unlocked the door and went inside. He turned on the lights and went down the basement steps. When he and Adam had left, the shards of glass from the broken mirror had been laying on the floor where they had fallen. When he looked where the mirror had been, he saw that the mirror was whole again. He crept up the steps and out of the house. Once on the porch, he locked the door and started back for Elliot's. On the way, he wondered about the mirror. He knew that it had been broken, but he wondered where the new one had come from. He didn't think that Adam had gone home without telling anyone first.

After he returned to Elliot's, he returned the keys and car to Adam.

"Did you slip out and go back to your house after we came here?"

"No. Why?"

"When I went down into the basement, the mirror was back up on the wall. It looked like it had never been broken."

"What could have happened?"

"I don't know."

Deep down, Barnabas knew. Somehow, Nicholas Blair was finding his way back. He didn't understand what was happening, nor did he understand why. For some reason, Nicholas was coming back for Adam. Barnabas did know that he would do anything in his power to protect him. Adam was the only chance he had for leading a normal life. He did remember that if anything was to happen to Adam, he would again be cursed as a vampire. Barnabas knew that he was not going to let on to anyone about how afraid he was.
