Gabriel I'm going to be a father.
Barnabas Congratulations. (He kisses Maggie's cheek. Quentin hugs her. They each shake Gabriel's hand)
Quentin Barnabas has some news.
Gabriel What is it?
Barnabas I've decided to go back to England. I think that it's time to face the past.
Maggie When are you leaving?
Barnabas In a couple of days.
Maggie We'll miss you.
Barnabas You must send word when the child is born.
Gabriel We will.
Barnabas I must be going. I still have things to do. (He exits.)
Maggie Quentin, have you seen Angelique?
Quentin Not since the wedding.
Gabriel Have you tried?
Quentin No. I've been busy.
Maggie Go see her. (He looks at them.)
Quentin I will. (He exits.)
Act 3 Scene 4
(Angelique's home. Enter Quentin. He knocks on the door. Angelique opens it a crack.)
Angelique Hello Quentin.
Quentin Hello. May I come in?
Angelique Now's not a good time. (She starts to shut the door only Quentin won't let her. He pushes the door open. He stares at her as she's pregnant.)
Quentin Why didn't you tell me? (Barnabas enters) One Collins is just as good as another? You just wanted the name? Everything was a lie! (She slaps him)
Angelique How dare you! (Quentin exits. She looks at Barnabas and begins to cry.) I...If... Here. (She hands him some paper.) This is where I will be staying.
Barnabas I'll have all of the rest of the things shipped there as soon as I get home. (He exits.)
Act 3 Scene 5
(Collinwood. Enter Quentin. Gabriel watches as he pours a drink and downs it in one gulp. He pours another one.)
Gabriel What's wrong? What's happened?
Quentin I saw Angelique.
Gabriel And what happened?
Quentin At first she didn't want to let me in. I forced my way in and now I'm sorry I did.
Gabriel Why?
Quentin Maggie's not the only one expecting.
Gabriel Congratulations.
Quentin You should be telling that to Barnabas! (Gabriel stares at him) I guess in her case as long as the last name is Collins the first name doesn't matter. I thought that she was different. I was a fool.(He downs his drink. Enter Barnabas) Well speak of the devil.
Barnabas Quentin, you have the wrong idea. That baby isn't mine. I...(Quentin hits him and he falls to the floor.) Quentin I'm the one everybody considers to be a cad but at least I would do the right thing by her.(He exits. Gabriel looks at Barnabas and shakes his head. He exits. Barnabas exits.)
Act 4 Scene 1
(Present day Collinwood. Amy and David look at each other.)
Amy What happened to Angelique and Barnabas? Did they get married? What about the baby?
Quentin I don't know. Barnabas left Collinwood and never returned.
David What happened to Angelique?
Quentin She left town and I never saw her again. She wrote to Maggie but I never asked her what she said. My own pride caused me to lose the one woman I loved and...(He looks at them) I never married because I married Angelique in Martenique.
Amy Oh! (She stands and walks over to him. She kisses his cheek. David stands and they exit.)
Act 4 Scene 2
(Two weeks later at Collinwood.Quentin opens the door. He stares. A woman looks at him and smiles)
Quentin Is it you?
Angelique Yes. (He kisses her passionately) Have you missed me?
Quentin I love you. I went to your house but you had gone. Where did you go? (He looks at her) Nevermind. It's none of my business.
Angelique May I come in?
Quentin Yes. Of course. (He steps back and she enters)
Angelique Let's get a few things straight. First, I did not nor did I ever think about sleeping with Barnabas. Who by the way has remarried. (Quentin smiles) Second, I became pregnant the night of Gabriel's wedding. I moved to Boston because I thought that you didn't want to see me.
Quentin And the child?
Angelique She grew up and married. (He looks at her) I always told her about her father. I told her that he would love her always. (He holds her)
Quentin I'm sorry. (She looks up at him)
Angelique I told you in Martenique you were mine but I would wait for you to give me your heart. I would not take it.
Quentin You had my heart before we parted. You still have it. (They kiss. Amy and David are watching)
Amy After we've been together that long do you think we'll still be in love?
David Yes. (They smile and exit.)
