Quentin: I don't wish to discuss the rumors.

(He exits)

Gabriel: What rumors?

Barnabas: That she's just using him, she has a lover or that she's already married.

Gabriel: Have you checked out any of these?

Barnabas: She's not married.

Gabriel: That's a start. (They continue to talk. )

(Act 1 Scene 5 Sarah's home. Quentin knocks on the door. Sarah opens it. He kisses her cheek and enters.)

Sarah: I'm glad you could come.

Quentin: Why are we meeting here?

Sarah: We can talk here. (He smiles. She offers him a glass of brandy. He takes it and sips it. They enter a parlor. Quentin sits on a small couch. He sits in a chair. He takes a big drink.) Do you have a preference?

Quentin: For our wedding? (She nods) No. Whatever date you pick is fine. (He finishes the rest of the brandy.) So when do I get to meet the rest of your family? (His speech is slurred and he's having a hard time focusing her)

Sarah: Quentin, are you alright?

Quentin: I think I need to lay down.

Sarah: Sure. (She stands and walks toward him. He stands and sways.) Are you going to be able to climb stairs?

Quentin: Yeah. I've gone home in much worse condition. (They start out and he stumbles. He catches himself) Maybe I was mistaken. (He collapses on the floor. Just before he passes out he hears her laugh and everything goes black.)

Act 2 Scene 1

(Collinwood. That evening. Enter Barnabas. Gabriel is talking to a young
woman.)

Gabriel: Cousin Barnabas, this is my fiancee Maggie Evans. Maggie, this is my cousin Barnabas Collins.

(Barnabas takes her hand and kisses it.)

Barnabas: It is very nice to meet you.

Maggie: It's nice to meet you finally, Mr. Collins. Gabriel has told me so much about you.

Barnabas: He has? (She nods) And you're still happy to meet me? (He smiles at them) Where is Quentin?

Gabriel: He never came back from Sarah's.

Barnabas: I --

(Someone knocks on the door. Barnabas answers it. Marcus is standing there. He hands Barnabas a note. Barnabas opens it and begins to read. He looks at Marcus. Marcus turns to leave and he takes two steps. Barnabas grabs his shoulder and jerks him inside the house. Enter Gabriel. Barnabas hands him the note and Gabriel reads it.)

Gabriel: I don't believe this! (He looks at Marcus) Who gave you this note?

Marcus: A man.

Gabriel: What did he look like?

Marcus: He was about 6' tall, brown hair, blue eyes and he was travelin' with a lady. (Enter Maggie. She stops and stares at Marcus) Maggie, tell them I don't lie. I just saw you last night.

Barnabas: You know this man?

Maggie: Yes. I've known him all his life. He's my nephew. He doesn't lie Gabriel.
