...he undresses quickly. He slips into the bed and blows out the lamp.)

Act 5 Scene 1

(Later Angelique is sitting in a chair. Quentin is dressed. He looks at her.)

Quentin Why didn't you stop me? Or at least tell me?

Angelique I tried. Would you have believed me if I had told you?

Quentin I'm sorry. I owe you...

Angelique You owe me nothing! You got what you came for.

Quentin But...What if I...

Angelique Get out! (She stands) Just get out of here! I never want to see you again! (He exits and she lays on the bed) I hate you Quentin Collins! You have ruined me!
(He walks out the door.)

Act 5 Scene 2

(Collinwood. Enter Quentin. He goes into the library. Maggie's there. She looks at him.)

Maggie You look terrible.

Quentin I feel worse than I look.

Maggie I know what you told Gabriel. You told him that you forced me but I sat him
down and explained to him that it was my fault. (He looks at her)The two times. (He turns red) Don't you think someone should know you're nice?

Quentin I'm not nice.

Maggie You are to me. I just don't know what happened. Maybe it's because Gabriel
seemed to be more interested in the business. (She looks at him) What do you mean you're not nice.

Quentin I know that you love Gabriel.I'm glad. (He sits in a chair and looks completely miserable. Maggie looks concerned. She walks behind him and begins to massage his shoulders.)

Maggie What have you done?

Quentin I just came from Angelique's cottage.

Maggie And you are in love with her.

Quentin I am but she's not. I slept with her.

Maggie She agreed to that?

Quentin No. I forced her. (He looks at Maggie.) Until tonight she'd never been with a
man. (She stares) Now she hates me.

Maggie Are you sure?

Quentin The last thing I heard her say was that she hated me. I fell in love with
her from the first time I laid eyes on her.

Maggie Did you tell her?

Quentin Yes. Before I raped her.

Maggie You've been drinking. You should sit down and offer to make her your wife.

Quentin She probably won't ever let me near her again.

Maggie I don't think I could blame her.

Quentin Me either.

Maggie I know you're not a bad man.

Quentin Would you invite her here so I could talk to her?

Maggie When?

Quentin Tomorrow?

Maggie Yes. (She smiles) Let's go.

Quentin Where?

Maggie Upstairs. We both need our rest. (He stands and they exit.)

Act 5 Scene 3

(The next day at the cottage. Enter Angelique. Maggie is there and she enters.)

Angelique Hello Maggie.

Maggie Hello Angelique. I'm going to be honest with you. I'm here because Quentin told me what he did.

Angelique I'll bet he was proud of himself.Rich man takes advantage of poor girl with
no family to help.

Maggie Actually he was miserable.

Angelique You realize that when I go back home I will not be a good catch. I have
been dishonored. (Maggie looks at her) No man will want a wife that is not pure.

Maggie Are you planning on leaving soon?

Angelique I will leave here and move into town.

Maggie That is not necessary.

Angelique Oh?

Maggie You can't go. Gabriel will be upset.

Angelique I have promised you that I will stay until the child is born. I will.

Maggie Thank you. (They hug.) I'd like you to come to the house this evening.

Angelique Alright. (Maggie smiles.)
