(Act 1 Scene 1)

Present day. Quentin is in the library. He's reading. Enter a young man carrying a large book.)

Quentin Hello David. I didn't know you were home.

David I have a school project.

Quentin Oh? What is it?

David I have to make a family tree.

Quentin Well you have all the information in your hands. Is there a problem?

David Sort of. Uncle Quentin in this book it says that your name sake was married.

Quentin I believe that at that time it was the proper thing to do if you were planning a family.

David So how come there are two brides listed for him? Did one die and he remarried?

Quentin Well not exactly. Sit down and I'll try to explain it.

(David sits in a chair across from him.) In 1898 Quentin was engaged ...

(Act 1 Scene 2)

( 1898 The Collins family home. Enter Quentin and Gabriel.)

Gabriel So when is Gerard due back?

Quentin If the currents and winds are with him by next week.

Gabriel He's the reason you and Maggie are waiting till the beginning of next month?

Quentin Yes. I want him to be my best man.

Gabriel I see. Have there been any prospects to fill Hodges' job at the office?

Quentin Not yet. (Enter Sarah)

Gabriel Hello Sweetheart. (They kiss)

Sarah Hello Gabriel. Hello Quentin. When are you leaving for the office?

Gabriel In a few minutes. Why?

Sarah I'd like to go into town.

Gabriel OK. (They start out. Gabriel turns and looks at Quentin.) Coming to the office?

Quentin Yes. (He walks out with them.)

Act 1 Scene 3

(A small house on the edge of town. Enter Quentin. He knocks on the door. Maggie opens it. He enters and she closes the door.)

Maggie Has there been any word?

Quentin He'll be here by the first of next week.

Maggie Then we can be married.

Quentin I can hardly wait. We can be married in three weeks.

Maggie Everything is almost ready. I have two more fittings for my dress.

Quentin I'll go see about the church.

Maggie I'll talk to Vicky about all of the food. Everything will be ready. (They smile. Quentin exits.)

Act 1 Scene 4

(A cafe. Enter Sarah. She looks around and sees a young woman sitting at a table. She walks over.)

Sarah Hello Jonique.

Jonique Hello Sarah. How are you?

Sarah I'm fine. What about you?

Jonique I lost my job.

Sarah Oh no. What happened?
