Gerard I would be honored. (He smiles at her.) If you ladies will excuse me I will get the carriage ready. (He stands and exits.)

Gabriel I'll give him a hand. (He kisses Sarah's cheek.) Excuse me. (He exits.)

Maggie Sarah, do you really think he's alright?

Sarah If I know Quentin Collins he's just fine.

Maggie I hope so. (She looks worried. They smile. Gabriel enters outside. Gerard is hitching a horse to the carriage. His horse tied to the back)

Gabriel What do you think happened to my brother?

Gerard I don't know. I know he left the office shortly after I did.

Gabriel Where did he go? (Gerard shrugs) If....

Gerard I wouldn't concern myself. He's always landed on his feet. Just like a cat.

Gabriel That's true. Even when you'd swear he wouldn't. (They smile) shall we go back to the ladies?

Gerard Yes. (They exit.)

Act 3 Scene 3

(the next morning at the office. Enter Gabriel. He sees Quentin laying on a cot. He's still wearing the same clothes from the day before. Gabriel leans over to wake him up and frowns. He shakes Quentin who opens his eyes.)

Gabriel Did you forget about having dinner?

Quentin I'm sorry. I got tied up. (Gabriel wrinkles his nose)

Gabriel Willingly?

Quentin What?

Gabriel You'd better get home before Maggie sees or smells you.

Quentin I...(He sniffs) What is that?

Gabriel If I'm not mistaken you were with Jonique last night. Why I'm not sure. I thought that you loved Maggie.

Quentin I do love Maggie. (Gabriel's looking at him.) I told you that I got tied up on business last night. (Gabriel's is looking at him strangely.) What? (Quentin looks in the mirror ans sees lipstick on his neck and shirt.) How'd that get there?

Gabriel Let's go hime and you tell me about last night. Ok?

Quentin Sure. What I remember of it. (They exit and enter outside. They mount horses and start riding)

Gabriel What happened?

Quentin I locked up after Gerard left and I was on my way home. I remembered that I'd forgotten to put away the ledger I was working on. I stopped by the office and put it away. I got sleepy so I laid down to rest.

Gabriel You walked to Jonique's room in your sleep?

Quentin No. I don't remember ever leaving the office. I had what I thought was a dream.

Gabriel Do you remember the dream?

Quentin I remember going to a room and seeing a girl who I thought was Maggie but when she turned around it was Jonique.

Gabariel Then you should have left.

Quentin I couldn't. It was as if she was controlling my mind and body.

Gabriel It wasn't a dream was it?

Quentin No. I wish it was.

Gabariel What happened?

Quentin We....(He turns red)

Gabriel Shall we say she could have a child?

Quentin Yes. I don't understand why I went there. I love Maggie and I want her as my wife.

Gabriel But you bedded Jonique.

Quentin It was almost like I was a man who hadn't had any water and I was just coming out of the desert. I couldn't get enough of her.

Gabariel Then maybe we should fire her. Or you stay home.

Quentin At least for today. I don't think I could face her.

Gabriel Or Maggie. (They exit.)

Act 3 Scene 4

(The office. Enter Gerard. Jonique is sitting at her desk. She looks up with a smile on her face. Gerard is staring at her and her smile disappears.)

Gerard It is you! I thought that you'd be banished to hell.

Jonique You are too late. She has one and I have the other.

Gerard What do you mean?

Jonique Quentin Collins is mine.
