Maggie No. He's my fiancé's cousin. Chris Jennings is my fiancé.

Nathaniel I really don't...

Sarah We really should stay at the inn.

Maggie Well everything is at their house so it would be more convenient to have you both stay there.

Sarah Oh.

Maggie They have servants and I'm going to stay there myself. (Someone knocks on her door. She opens it and Chris is there. They hug and he kisses her cheek.)Hello Chris.

Chris I came by to see if you're ready.

Maggie I...(She turns to Sarah) Sarah Johnson, Reverend Nathaniel Trask, this is my my fiancé Chris Jennings.(Chris holds out his hand and Nathaniel takes it.)

Chris It's nice to meet you.

Nathaniel It's nice to meet you Christopher. We were telling Miss Evans that we'll stay at the inn.

Chris Oh. Quentin will be disappointed. I saw Reverend Sweeten.

Maggie How is he?

Chris He's not going to be able to perform the marriage.

Maggie Oh no! What happened?

Chris It seems his daughter and son-in-law need him.

Maggie I hope it's not serious. Who'll we get now?

Chris We'll find someone. (He smiles) Reverend Trask would you and your fiancé care to join us for dinner?

Nathaniel I don't...

Chris You have to eat anyway. Besides this way you'll get a chance to meet my cousins.

Maggie Gabriel's home?

Chris He just got here today.

Maggie Is Vicky with him?

Chris No. She stayed behind with her husband.

Maggie Oh.

Sarah Nathaniel, would you like to join them?

Nathaniel That would be nice. (They smile and exit.)

Act 1 Scene 4

(Collinwood. Enter Chris,Maggie, Sarah, and Nathaniel. Nathaniel's eyes are darting around.) What is the name of your cousins?

Maggie Collins. (Enter Gabriel and Quentin)

Chris Gabriel, you remember Maggie?

Gabriel Yes I do. How are you Maggie?

Maggie I'm fine.

Gabriel Chris where is your fiancé?

Chris Maggie and I are engaged. (Gabriel looks at Quentin then at Maggie.)

Gabriel Apparently I was gone longer than I thought. (Nathaniel looks at them)

Maggie Gabriel and Quentin Collins, this is Sarah and her fiancé Reverend Nathaniel Trask. This is Gabriel Collins. (Gabriel shakes Nathaniel's hand and then kisses Sarah's hand)

Gabriel It's very nice to meet you both.

Sarah It's very nice to meet you Mr. Collins.

Gabriel Please call me Gabriel.

Maggie This is Quentin Collins. (Quentin shakes Nathaniel's hand and kisses Sarah's.)

Quentin It's very nice to meet you Reverend Trask and your lovely fiancé.

Sarah Thank you Mr. Collins.

Quentin Mr. Collins was my father Miss Johnson. Please call me Quentin. In answer to your unspoken question Reverend Trask. Maggie and I were engaged then I introduced her to Chris. We realized that we didn't love each other.

Nathaniel Oh.

Sarah This is a lovely home.

Maggie You should see upstairs. It's more beautiful.

Sarah I'd love to see it sometime.

Quentin If you and Reverend would like I can show you up to your rooms.

Sarah Uh...We're staying...

Nathaniel Here at Mr. Collins' invitation. (Maggie, Sarah, and Chris look at him) That is if it's still agreeable.

Quentin Yes. Would you like to see your rooms?

Nathaniel You can show Sarah then she can show me.

Quentin Sure. (He looks at Sarah.) Are you ready Miss Johnson?

Sarah Yes. Thank you.

Quentin Excuse us. (They walk upstairs)

Gabriel Let's go into the library. (They enter the library)So Chris when will Reverend Sweeten be paying us a visit?

Chris He won't. He's going to England.

Gabriel So who's going to perform the marriage?

Maggie How about Reverend Petersen?

Gabriel He's a good choice.

Nathaniel Miss Evans, I would be honored to perform the ceremony for you and your fiancé.

Maggie I couldn't...(He smiles at her)Really?

Nathaniel Consider it my gift to you and Mr. Jennings.

Chris Thank you Reverend Trask. (They shake hands.)

Act 1 Scene 5

(Upstairs. Sarah is looking around. Quentin opens a door and she stares.)

Quentin While you're here you can use this room.

Sarah It's beautiful.

Quentin It belonged to a very beautiful woman. Her name is Angelique.

Sarah Where is she?

Quentin She married my cousin and they live in the old house. But at the moment they're out of the country. Your fiancé can use the room next door.

Sarah Thank you. (She enters the room and Quentin follows her. She turns and finds him very close. They kiss passionately and he picks her up. He gently lays her on the bed. She watches as he starts to unbutton his shirt.)We mustn't do this.

Quentin You want me as much as I want you. (She stands and begins fussing with her hair.)

Sarah Mr. Collins, I'm engaged. (He walks up and puts his arms around her. He kisses her neck and she shivers.)No. This isn't right.(She breaks free and exits)

Quentin You will be mine Miss Johnson. Very soon. It's fate.(He exits.)

Act 2 Scene 1

(Later that night. Quentin stumbles up the stairs. He opens his door and enters. He gets undressed and crawls into bed. He feels a body next to him. He starts to light the lamp but they stop him.)

Voice (W) It's more fun to feel you way around.

(They kiss passionately and he moans.)

Act 2 Scene 2

(The next morning at the office. Enter Quentin. His eyes are bloodshot. Chris and Gabriel look at him.)

Gabriel What happened to you?

Quentin I had a dream.

Gabriel What kind of dream?

Quentin I dreamed I spent all night with a woman. I didn't get any sleep but... (Chris is staring) What?
