Chris Look in the mirror. (He does and sees a scratch on the side of his neck.) Looks like a pretty real dream.

Quentin Yes. (He shakes his head.)

Act 2 Scene 3

(Collinwood. Enter Nathaniel. He opens Sarah's door and she'd just finishing her hair.)

Nathaniel Good morning. (She jumps and looks at him.)

Sarah How many times have I asked you to please knock? I might have been dressing. (He backhands her and she falls to the floor.)

Nathaniel You will never use that tone with me again. Do you understand me? (She's holding her cheek and doesn't answer him. He grabs her arms and pulls her up.)

Sarah Yes Nathaniel. I'm sorry. (She sees a gleam in his eyes.) No! (She tries to get away from him but he pushes her on the bed. He begins to pull at her dress and to kiss her. She screams and he stands up. He looks around then at her.)

Nathaniel We'll be leaving within the hour for Collinsport. You will be ready.

Sarah Yes Nathaniel. (He walks out.)

Act 2 Scene 4

(Maggie's cottage. Maggie opens the door and Sarah is there. Maggie smiles as Sarah enters. She sees the bruise on Sarah's cheek)

Maggie What happened?

Sarah It's nothing. He just lost control.

Maggie Who?

Sarah I don't want to talk about it.

Maggie Was it one of the servants? If it was I'll tell Chris.

Sarah It's nothing. Maggie, I'm dying to know how you got mixed up with this family of such good looking men.

Maggie Simple. I hit Quentin on the head. (Sarah looks at her) I live here alone. About a year ago we had a scare. A man was here and alot of killing was going on. One night I heard a noise. I grabbed a skillet and stood behind the door. Quentin opened it and stepped in. I hit him and knocked him out. When he came to I apologized and we were engaged two weeks later. He
introduced me to Chris and that was nine months ago. How did you meet Reverend Nathaniel Trask?

Sarah He came to out town because our minister retired.

Maggie You two fell in love?

Sarah Yes. (She smiles) We've been engaged for a year.

Maggie Have you and he...You know.

Sarah Of coursr not!(Her eyes get big)Have you and Chris?

Maggie No. I do know that a while back he visited a woman named Charity.

Sarah Who's she?

Maggie She's the type men go to before marriage.

Sarah Oh. (She gets a comprehending look) Oh! You don't mind that he visited her?

Maggie A little bit but I understand why he did it. Hasn't Nathaniel ever...?

Sarah Oh no. He says that if a woman can come into her marriage pure that a man should also. (They smile and exit.)

Act 2 Scene 5

( A house. Nathaniel is getting dressed. A young woman is laying in bed. She has bruises on her arms and a bruise on her cheek. He lays money on the dresser and exits.)

Act 3 Scene 1

(Collinwood. Two weeks later Quentin enters and goes upstairs. He hears crying coming from Sarah's room. He walks over and knocks on the door. He enter and sees Sarah laying on the bed. He walks over to her. Her hair is messed up and her dress is torn. He touches her shoulder and she flinches.)

Quentin Sarah? It's me Quentin. What happened?

Sarah Go away. Leave me alone. (He gently pulls her toward him and as he does he sees bruises on her face and neck. He sees some on her upper arms.)

Quentin My God! Who did this to you?

Sarah Please go. If he finds you here it'll only make it worse.

Quentin I'm not leaving until you tell who did this and why.

Sarah It was my fault. I never should have asked him if he'd ever....ever visited a woman like Charity.

Quentin Nathaniel did this?

Sarah He said the devil was in control of my thoughts and should be punished for letting him do that.

Quentin So he beat you?

Sarah I'm his fiance. I provoked him by asking questions that are none of my business. (She stands and looks at Quentin. He touches her face and she presses her cheek into his palm. He tilts her face up and they kiss passionately. She wraps her arms around his neck and they moan. He gently removes her arms and they exit.)

Act 3 Scene 2

(Maggie's cottage. Enter Maggie. She opens the door. Chris and Nathaniel are there.)

Maggie Chris? What's wrong?

Chris Let's get married. Now.

Maggie But the wedding...(She sees a couple behind Nathaniel.) Ok. (They enter. Act 3 Scene 3 An hour later.)

Nathaniel I now pronounce you man and wife.(He smiles at them.) You may kiss the bride. (Chris and Maggie kiss. Nathaniel and the couple exit.)

Act 3 Scene 4

(Collinwood. Enter Nathaniel. He goes upstairs to Sarah's room and she's not there.) Sarah?! Sarah! Where are you? You know I don't like this kinds of games. (He opens the closet and looks.
No one is there. He walks out into the hall and opens a door. The room is empty. He opens another door and Quentin is there. His hair is messed up, he's shoeless and shirtless. There are old and new scratches on his back and chest. He reaches for his shirt.)

Quentin May I help you?

Nathaniel I'm looking for Sarah. Have you seen her?(They both look at the bed. It's messy. Quentin smiles)

Quentin I've been occupied for a while. Did you try the library? She said something about that.

Nathaniel Of course. (He exits and Quentin smiles.)

Act 3 Scene 5

( The library. Enter Nathaniel. He sees Sarah. She's reading. He walks over to her and she looks up.) Here you are.

Sarah Is there a problem?

Nathaniel I want you to pack your things.

Sarah Why?

Nathaniel We're leaving. We're going home.

Sarah But...

Nathaniel We're leaving. (He grabs her arm and pulls her up. They start upstairs as Quentin is coming down with a young woman. The young woman stares at Nathaniel.)

Woman Nate? Is it you? (She smiles) It is you!

Nathaniel I'm sorry but you have me confused with someone else. (He walks past them pulling Sarah up the stairs.)

Quentin Are you sure?

Woman I never forget a face. (She smiles) Was that all you wanted from me? I could make you very happy.

Quentin Sorry. I've already been made happy.

Woman I'll bet she didn't do....(She whispers in his ear. He looks at her and they exit.)

Act 4 Scene 1

(Quentin's room. They enter and he locks the door. She kneels in front of him and he smiles.)

Act 4 Scene 2

(The next day. Maggie's cottage. She opens the door and Sarah's there. Sarah enters and Maggie closes the door.)

Maggie Hello.

Sarah I came by to say good-bye. Nathaniel and I are leaving. (She has tears in her eyes.)

Maggie You fell out of love.

Sarah What?

Maggie You're in love with someone else.

Sarah Don't be rediculous.

Maggie I know that look. Who is he?

Sarah I love...(Nathaniel knocks on the door)...my fiance (Maggie opens the door)Hello.

Nathaniel Are you ready to leave Sarah?

Sarah Yes Nathaniel. (She hugs Maggie and whispers in her ear.) You're right. I love Quentin Collins but it can never be. (She steps back and they exit. Maggie grabs her cloak and exits.)

Act 4 Scene 3

(The office. Maggie bursts in. Chris, Gabriel, and Quentin look at her.)

Maggie Nathaniel is taking Sarah.

Chris She's his fiance.

Maggie You don't understand. She's in love with Quentin. The next time he hits her may end her life. Please bring her back.

Quentin I would if I could. I can't. She's given me no...

Maggie Her last words to me were 'You're right. I love Quentin Collins but it can never be.' He'll kill her next time.

Gabriel Quentin, let's talk.(They walk away.)

Quentin What?

Gabriel You love her and she loves you. Go get her. (Quentin looks at them and they nod. He exits.)

Act 4 Scene 4

(Three days later at an inn. Quentin enters He talks to the clerk. The clerk nods. Quentin exits up the stairs. He gets to the room and hears Sarah cry out. He bursts through the door. Sarah is there)

Sarah Quentin! Behind you! (He turns and faces Nathaniel.)

Nathaniel I thought you'd be here. I'm going to...(Quentin hits him and he falls)

Quentin Sarah, are you alright? He hasn't hurt you?

Sarah Yes. No. I'm fine. (He takes her hand. He looks at Nathaniel on the floor.)

Quentin If you ever come near her again I'll kill you.

Nathaniel I suppose you've already bedded her. Just like the tramp she is. She's a disappointment.

Sarah From the day I met you I haven't felt clean. You're evil.

Quentin I fell in love at first sight. I want her to marry me.

Sarah I went willingly to Quentin's bed. He's more man than you'll ever be. (She looks at Quentin then at Nathaniel) In every way. (They exit.)

Nathaniel I will have my revenge Quentin Collins.(He stands and exits.)

Act 4 Scene 5

(Maggie's cottage. Maggie, Chris, Gabriel, Sarah and Quentin are there.)

Maggie Sarah, I want you to have the cottage.

Sarah But.........

Chris We'll be back but only for visits. (They smile. Maggie kisses Gabriel's cheek. She looks at Quentin.)

Maggie I love you. (They hug and she kisses his cheek. She hugs Sarah and Chris kisses her cheek.)

Chris You keep these two in line.

Sarah Oh. You take care of Maggie.

Chris I will. (They exit. Gabriel smiles)

Gabriel I'll see you later. (He exits. Sarah and Quentin kiss passionately. They exit.)
