Barnabas pushed back the green and red plaid blanket and surveyed the handsome baby in his arms with ill-concealed distaste and anger. It had a moon-shaped birthmark on it's wrist. One would never call that a "beauty" mark--it was ugly.

Damn them--how dare they kidnap him just as he was about to marry Lady Kitty Hampshire, who he knew was the reincarnation of his beloved Josette? Just when happiness was once more within his grasp, cruel fate had intervened and he had lost her again!

Barnabas was supposed to protect this creature, turn baby "Joseph" over to Megan and Phillip Todd to raise as a human being, then wait for him to grow, evolve at a terrifyingly rapid rate into an adult, seemingly human, male, who would marry Carolyn Stoddard and create a race of new Leviathans.

Barnabas trudged up towards Widows' Hill, a full moon seeming to follow him along the path he knew all too well. The sea down below lapped greedily at the shore, the waves high and hungry. Barnabas covered the baby's face with the blanket, closed his eyes, tossed it into the raging ocean below. "Whoops!" he said, laughing uproariously.
