Barnabas surveyed the unhappy Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, who was
standing dangerously close to the edge of the cliff. He moved behind
her, quietly, his arms outstretched. He sensed her fear, her despair,
her desire to join the other wailing widows. She wanted more than
anything to leap into the icy waters below, much as his beloved
Josette had done in 1796, despite his efforts to save her.
They talked of life and death together, the vampire and the matriarch
of Collinwood, who had not left the grounds of the mansion since Paul
Stoddard had disappeared all those years ago.

Elizabeth felt even worse after talking to her newfound cousin. His
words about death made it sound pleasant, something to be desired
rather than feared. She stepped forward, staring at the sea as it
endlessly crashed and foamed at the shore, and felt it beckoning,
welcoming her.

"Elizabeth?" Barnabas said soberly, and she turned and gazed at him
over her shoulder, looking like a wounded bird asking for help.

"Yes, Barnabas?" she asked, hoping he was going to say something
that would stop the agony piercing her very soul.

"JUMP, JUMP, JUMP, JUMP, JUMP!" Barnabas chanted. "Go on,
don't be a scaredycat, one more step, just one more step,
onemorestep, then jumpjumpJUMP!"

Liz leaped.
