Willie waited, crouched low behind the bushes, waiting for Nicholas to leave.

It seemed to take forever until finally the door opened and Nicholas stepped out, then suddenly another figure-Willies heart sunk as he saw Maggie Evans.

He thought to himself that Nicholas wasted no time to get back into Maggies good graces. She really had no remembrance of the evilness of him, so she had didn't have any reason to dislike him.

Maggie he remembered, had always been a special woman in his heart, but she would never know.

He could never face her and to tell her. He couldn't handle rejection yet again in his life.

Nicholas guided her towards the car. And in his fashion, opened the door for her. Once she was comfortably inside, he then rounded the car, sliding into the drivers seat, they sped away.

Willie remained hidden until the car was out of sight. He got up and went up to the door, looking one last time in case they returned, he swallowed hard and trying the knob, found it unlocked to his great relief.

This part would be easy he thought, but it was the going in and poking around inside that scared him.

He quickly entered, closing the door behind him.

Trying to hurry, he went straight to the pile of papers at the desk finding nothing but reciepts for antiques, he rifled through the drawers too, still finding nothing of any help or clue.

Going upstairs, he proceeded through the bedrooms, all empty now, except for one room in which a bed, small table with a lamp and a chair were the only contents.

Again, still finding nothing, he returned back downstairs. He put this last place off until the last. It scared him the most. His mouth was feeling dry and his heart began to race as he neared the door of the basement.

The big wooden door was frightening, too many bad things had happened behind that door.

He nervously turned the handle, the creaking of its' old hinges was fitting.

Putting his head in first, he glanced around to make sure no one was there. He sure didn't want to run into one of Nicholas' minions.

It was only his loyalty to Barnabas that was prodding him forwards to do this.

Walking down the steps, step by careful and quiet step, he was able to make out the basement.

The hair on the back of his neck bristled, making him more jumpy then he was already...seeing nothing again. It was totally bare. He practically tripped over himself, racing up the steps and out of the house.

Hurrying away from there, he thought about it, it just wasn't a "normal" house, but then, neither was the person living in it.

Looking up at the sky, he noticed the sun would be setting soon. The thought of Lestat lurking somewhere, caused his steps to quicken.

Barnabas waited with hope that Willie would return with some kind of a clue, but in truth, didn't really feel like he would.

Nicholas and Lestat were not stupid by any means. They wouldn't leave evidence just lying about to be discovered. But somewhere, he just had to believe that there was at least one tiny bit of hope somewhere.

Hearing Willie enter, Barnabas' slim hopes were dashed. "I'm real sorry Barnabas, I waited til he left, just like ya said to do, and guess what? He's goin' out with Maggie Evans again, oh, and anyway, I looked everywhere, even that spooky basement-nothin."'

"Thank you Willie." Barnabas knew that he had tried. He was resigned to the fact of having to confront Nicholas yet once more.

He had to find Ann, and at that thought, renewed pain and desperation lashed at his heart yet again...........
