Surprisingly, she found herself not tired after what seemed to be hours of walking. He still said not a word, spoke nothing. Finally she had asked, "Where are we going?"
A fireball hissed from the sky at that moment making her jump once more towards him for safety, this time he did allow her to touch him. "Its the giant balls of fire, they will cause you to become quite mad if they come close enough." He matter-of-factly told her, she clung still tighter to him and finding some solace in that at least. The giant ball of light sped straight for them. It sped directly at them, rolling and spreading out sparks and sizzling with its energy. Behind it was the trail of burning lines in the parched red earth. At that moment it swerved and sped off to the right. She watched it with horror and fascination.
Just then she had noticed that there were a group of creatures following them. The glow from the fireball had lit up the features of a group of what could be called deformed dogs, or once had been dogs, or possibly ancestors of dogs. They sensed her watching them and flattened their bodies out. Their heads were dog-like but the legs were vestigial. They were hairless and tailess. They snarled, hating to be seen. Barnabas, looked at her and raised his arm to place around her shoulders. Felt her trembling with fear. Again, the feeling of remorse went through him. He had remembered when he had first walked these valleys, but his fear was great. For he had done this alone. He would not do that to her. She caught the odor of the fireball. It was Hellfire and corruption, ruined hopes and evil desires.
Mewing, the crowd of mutant dogs had broken up and dispersed.the swoosh of heavy bodies dragged through the red dust. Two of the dog-beasts sat beneath a burnt tree glaring their fangs at them. Another fireball then lurched out of the distance, spinning away from them.
Off in the distance there was a shack, with what had appeared to be a man. She found her grip on Barnabas tightening, as he drew her closer to him, he said,"Don't be frightened, I will protect you like I said, I will let no harm come to you, But I must show you these lands." She looked up at his face and noticed pain and anguish with his words. "why must I?"..................
